Q:

Offset moderator not parallel

Hi guys,

I have noticed that my offset moderator does not sit parallel to the airtube. I only noticed this when I looked at other guns (on YouTube etc) and the space is more parallel. If u look at this pic you can see that the offset moderator is perfectly level….

But if u look at my gun the shroud is level at the exhaust holes but is almost touching the cap of the gauge….

What can be causing this? Is it the barrel tension too tight? Is it something I did wrong? I noticed that when I tighten the stock screw on tight then the offset mod moves along slowly and touches the cap of the gauge. I checked everything and cannot figure it out….

My only worry is that it might cause POI shift depending on how I tighten the stock screw. Any advice if yours will be appreciated my friend.

Thanks

Jamal

Thanks guys. I can happily report that all issues have been solved.

I stripped gun down and removed barrel from rear breech. Attached rear breach ALONE to AT, then slid action (the bit with the 8 shape clamp) onto the AT until it lined up and then inserted barrel from front end and torqued until tight into the rear breech. Reassembled all other bits. Had to fumble about with the eccentric screw on the rear of the stock also.

Long story shortened, now perfectly parrallel from offset mod to AT.

THANKS AGAIN. I hope this helps somebody else out if ever they have similar issue.

The only time I have had this happen to me was when the breech loosened on me. I. What I do now I make sure the breech binds the rear of the action. I get the breech as tight as I can onto the action then but the breech block and upper receiver into a rubber vice If the block has a gap in it the system will not tension correctly. I tighten the shorts at 10-foot pounds, standards at 12-foot pounds and the longs at 14-foot pounds.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Will give it due consideration. It’s something small I’m obviously overlooking but will keep trying! Have emailed Ed and hopefully he can end this misery once and for all…

At least I’m getting pretty darn good at dismantling and re assembling my R3m…

This is how the moderator should look with a small gap between the airtube and moderator. I chose this picture to illustrate how it should look when properly installed. I just received and installed this on Saturday.

I don’t think the barrel moderator nut requires more (or less) torque. Because the change occurs when it’s tighten onto the stock.

When the stock screw is tighten back-out/loosen the second affixing hex in the back of the stock till its loose.

Turn it light till it makes contact within, then tighten about 2 hours.

On my Matador R3M when the action is out of the stock the gap is open and only when it’s tighten into the stock does it close and becomes parallel.

After any dismantling of the barrel moderator nut sometimes it helps to reset the action by loosenig the 2 scope rail hex nut and retighten.

Hi Greg

Yes the stock washer is still glued into place. When I put the action onto the stock (without tightening the stock screw) it’s almost perfectly parallel ie. Whitin a tolerance I could live with.

Only when I tighten the stock screw, does the gap (between the offset mod and front gauge cap) slowly start closing in. I did try using a thin washer under the trigger assembly (where the stock bolt screws in) and yes this does fix it but creates a gap of about 2mm between the fore end of the stock and the air tube.

I’m sure there shouldn’t be a need for additional washers/shims. Cannot understand what went wrong. Checked and rechecked and still not parallel. Could it be that the barrel moderator nut requires more (or less) torque?

During assembling, I’ve noticed that when I put the air tube back into the round “clamp” it’s a snug fit with a tiny space above the air tube and upper block. Like I said before, when I put in the stock without screwing it in place it seems fine. When I start screwing the stock on its this “space” that allows the air tube to go against the upper block causing the air tube to touch the offset mod.

Any advice from the experts will indeed be appreciated.

missing the stock washer that’s located inside the stocks fastening hole. I’m guessing it might have fell out ……… :fishinghole: …. If so use 2-way sticky tape to hold it onto the stock ………. gluing it will not hold it for long.

…. u could also add a thicker or thinner washer too to corect for parallelism.

But I’ve resently shimed the AT under the trigger asssembly with 3 pieces of a Coke can till parallel with the barrel.
For a “true free float” into the stock.

Now no possible POI shifting and I don’t need to tighten the stock screw very tighly anymore, just snug.

Thx Brian. Email sent.

if you can’t upload them email me the pics Jamal, I have installed a ton of these, I’ll help you out.

Oops pics not uploading….. Sorry about that…
