Q:

new mutant

I had been wanting to try a mutant since I first read dmans posts about them. Pictures of that trigger group made me drool. But I had already tried a edgun 2.5 ,and a vulcan and was dissatisfied with both. I could not stop the wandering zero they both had. I just decided it must be a bulpup thing with the barrel clamped to the air tube causing the problem. But I love the bulpup platform for hunting , so when I found a new mutant standard for sale at a good discount I could not resist. WOW! Yes the trigger is just as good as they say it is. I have not had a zero that changes when it decides to and it is very accurate.I am like others who said they did not like the stock until they tried it. Now I think it looks great! I am a function over form shooter and this pup rocks. I am not getting the shot count I hear about yet but I may be missing something. I have only adjusted the hammer spring for fps, trying to get 885-890 average with 15.9 and 18.1 ammo. At these two settings of spring adjustment,15.9 shot count from 220 bar fill is great at 60 shots. However, same fps setting (with hs turned in) with 18.1 pellet will barely get 36 shots. While thats not bad considering tube size, others say they get many more shots than that. Over all I am very happy with the gun. I have shot 9 squirrels with it in the week since I got it, one at 63yd,and all head shots! Great pup! Good shooting to yall.

I have a Clearidge RM 3-9×32 on mine. The scope is only 12 oz. and it can be mounted pretty low for a low scope height. It is truly one millirad at 9x. This makes it easy to compute holdovers using software like Chairgun and Strelok.

I know it is not quite 14x, but it is quite sufficient for field target matches. The clarity is good, turrets are very repeatable. I don’t know whether this makes a difference or not, but the glass is Japanese.

Heh Fox, I have a burris timberline 4.5-14 with the bullet drop hash marks ( 4 of them). the eye relief is a little long ,and the eye box critical but once you get used to it it is very serviceable. It is small, relatively light and good quality for the price. I took it off another gun and until I find something I like better,it will get used on the mutant.I am a leupold fan but parallax only down to 50 yd. on the 4.5- 14 is a deal breaker for me. The right scope is hard to find. I like mil/mil retical ,focus down to 10 or 20, light weight ,16 oz. or so, and quality glass. If leupold would only bring down their focus range, I could have the custom shop install a mil-mil . That would be the ultimate scope for my use. Your mileage may differ !

Hey T-Rex…..

glad u found out about the Taipan, they are great bullpups.
What scope, are you using? 🙄

My standard has a few internal tweaks done, so my efficiency is a bit above average.
That said … on a 250 bar fill with JSB 15.9’s at @ 900 fps can make 60 shots on 95 bar ( 155 left ) and get a 6th mag making 72 shots to just under regs set pressure of 145 bar … yet still shot a 7th mag with little if any POI change at @ 40 yards.
Done it now a couple times …. 84 shots ( 7 mags worth ) on a single fill. Ending at @ 100 bar still left in tank.

IMO your 900 fps with 18.1’s is very near the power limit of a standards 35 ft lbs max rating. ( your at 32.5 ft lbs )
* any time you lean on a PCP for near max power it will be an air hog :confusedn:

Dairyboy,I only have scuba tanks that I can get filled to 3400psi. i have 3 of them on a cascade fill system. I get tons of fills at 3200 (220 bar) but only a few at 3400 psi. So…….no problem really ,36 shots is at least 4 times as many as I need on a hunt, and I found a great scuba shop where if you buy your tanks from them (and I did) the air is always……FREE !….. It sounds like you work on a dairy farm. I am 65 year old and put in 40 years on a rice, cotton, wheat , corn , and soy bean farm ! Good shooting to ya.

Glad you love your Mutant I sure do! As for your shot count 900fps with the 18.1gr is higher than I have mine tuned (865fps) and if you only fill to 220 that would be your problem why your not getting your shots maybe. There a 250bar fill gun so you have 30 bar left to play which can get you more shots. I still haven’t chronied to see how many shots I get but I suspect it’s pretty high. Whatever you do just have fun and enjoy it! I too love the stock and am a form over function guy and it is by far my favorite Airgun I’ve ever had!
