Help. HST nut came off spring

While adjusting the speed on my Matador, I loosened the nut too far, and cannot get the nut screwed back in, because of the amount of spring tension required to have the nut reach its threads. Tried c-clamp, didn’t work.
Is there a trick to fix this, or do I have to send it out?
