Q:

New here. Questions.

I know this has been discussed a little, i’ve searched and read as much as I could find and still wondering about the Talon 18″ on C02. I’ve seen Paul’s video on the Condor on C02 (i was very impressed with the accuracy) but his gun was about 40 fps lower than what’s advertised for the Condor. I know that advertised figures are usually high, but for C02, I thought they were more accurate. I was hoping that a Talon 18″ .22 could get around 650 fps w/ 14.3 at 75 degrees, but that’s what Paul’s Condor with a 24″ barrel was doing.

I’m looking for a C02 because of the shot count, plus I have a 20lb siphon tank filled for refilling. I’d go the HPA route, but the expense of fill equipment and a place to get it filled presents a problem. I do however, have a Crosman pump (and a Disco in .22).

So for those that have any experience with this setup, either a Talon 18″ or similar setup, what are your thoughts with C02? Accuracy is way more important to me than velocity. I’ll be doing some vermin control, and target shooting. My Disco is setup for 18 ft.lbs (tuned for 40 shots) and it’s plenty powerful enough for 50 – 60 yds. I had it shooting at 860, but I’d tamed it down for better consistency and more shots. But if I could have a Talon setup for 14-15 ft.lbs for a few hundred shots, that would be the ticket. I live in So. Maryland and the temps range from 80-95 from June – late September, so shooting this time of year doesn’t yield a problem as far as low temp goes.

This is a great board, hope to hear from some of the gurus out there.

I recently got an 18″ .177 barrel for one of my TSS’s. Stock rifle and tank, TH @ .034″, PW @ 1. I’m getting an easy 60 shots with JSB Exacts, high of 959 fps, low of 876 fps. With a 3K psi fill, it’s down to 2500 after 60 shots. No perceptible change in POI at 30 yards. That’s an average of right around 16 fpe, which I believe is what you were looking for. This setup is good for 1/4-3/8″ groups at 30 yards consistently, and even managed a sub-1/2″ group at 45 yards. BTW, I got the 18″ barrel in trade for a CO2 setup, and I’m thinking I got the better end of that deal :-)! If you’d like to see my spreadsheet and graphs, email me direct and I’ll shoot them off. Later.

Like found on the Disco or BAM B50 series.

Thanks for the info!

You can buy one from here http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/accessory.pl?accessory_id=303 But be warned, if you take the hose off of the pump it will probably leak. What kinda fitting does your hose have on the end? you could try here http://airgunsofarizona.com/ and see if they have a quick coupler that would fit your hose.

where can I get the 1/4 BSP to 1/8 BSP adapter? And, would you know how much it costs.

Thanks for the replies!

I have been using the Aifroce hand pump for a month now. I have filled it from emty 2 times which is a bitch, and 60 times from 2000 to 3000, which is not bad at all, if you are in good shape.

Yeah, 150 pumps is a chore. I guess to put it in perspective, it’s no different that shooting 2 40 shot groups with my Disco. Each session takes roughly 65 pumps, so 80 shots would be around 130-140 strokes. Pretty much the same as you are doing, the only difference is that pumping to 2000psi is a lot easier than going to 3000 psi. This is why I was looking to go C02, no pumping.

Much of the pump effort depends on what pressure your gun is at after your desired number of shots.

My SS has an 18 inch barrel…. with the 12 inch, I got markedly poorer performance with lower powered shots.

To top off the SS after an extended shooting session is generally a bit of a chore. If I shoot mine down to 1900psi to top it back off is around 150 or so pumps. I dont find it tiring so much as boring.

My SS has had mods… was tuned by Anthony back when it was a .22 so I’m unsure of what exactly was done. I had to do a lot of tweaking with the tophat to get this number of shots at this setting though.

do you mean from 0 psi, or between fillups as in after a shooting session of say 50-60 shots is a ball buster?

If it’s not too much of a chore to fill between shooting sessions, then I may just go the HPA route. My Disco only takes 65 -68 pumps after a 40 shot session. So, that to me isn’t too bad. If it were 200 though, cough, I’d look for another method.

BTW, 70 shots at 16 ft.lbs to me is awesome. Is this from a standard SS, no mods and a 12″ barrel? I’d be interested in getting something just like this, even in .177. If thats the case, I can imagine what the 18″ barrel could do. I was originally going to get a .177, but with my stock of .22 ammo, i was leaning towards .22.

I’ve been on a mission to get lower powered shots out of my SS in .177 for a while now.

So far, the best I’ve been able to get is around 70 shots at around 16fpe. These are pretty consistent, too. My experience with my gun has shown that below 14fpe, the velocity spread is unacceptable.

I’m still working at it, though.

edit….
and while I do have a CF tank, I normally use a hand pump to fill most all my guns. Yes, the SS and Condor is a ball buster to fill from a pump… but it can certainly be done.

But pumping the tank from 0-3000 psi has got to be chore! Yep, i know that once the gun is at 3000, i wouldn’t empty it completely. So, this is an option of course.

Does anyone here (that’s reading this post – DOH!) use a hand pump to pump their HPA tanks up? I had a super10 once, yep once. It was a lot of work to pump it back up, however, that gun was way up there in velocity.

I know the AF guns are adjustable in terms of velocity, do you have any experience with the lower settings? Again, 15 ft.lbs is fine for me, anything more and I break out the CZ machII or 77/22. It’s more of a medium power compact “cool factor” airgun that I’m looking for.

If I can get 15 ft.lbs (in .177 or .22) out of the Talon SS or 18″ for a good amount of shots, I’ll certainly consider HPA instead of C02.

All you need is a 1/4 BSP to 1/8 BSP adapter and you could hook your Disco pump up you Airforce bottle.

That sounds like you had a bad time with C02! Sorry to hear it. I was thinking about the .177, but I wanted to try get a little more FP, so .22 is what i’m looking for. The velocity range for your setup sounds terrible, hopefully this was just a problem that you experienced and that others have better luck.

Thanks for the reply.

Others have had good luck with the Talon on CO2. As for me, I got the CO2 adapter and boxed it up to send back within an hour.

I had it on a Talon SS with 18 inch .177 barrel. The CO2 adapter was leaking through the burst disc, fixed that and all seemed well. I got velocity ranging from 642fps to 760fps in .177. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the velocity fluctuation. I guess if your shooting range was 25 yards or less, the variance would show minimal POI change, but at distance that would be a significant drop.

I’d get some shots that sounded and looked normal and get other shots that blew ‘snow’ out my barrel. I tried three different CO2 tanks with the same results.

After about 50 shots or so, I started leaking CO2 from the tophat on the adapter.

Again, others have had good luck out of their adapter… as for me… I’ll stick with HPA.
