Q:

Just got mine

FedEx just dropped off a box which contained a Talon SS and I’m in love… again. Already adjusted the top hat. Set it to 0.070″. It was set for I don’t know exactly what but something in excess of 0.085″. Incidently, the top hat is bottomed out. No more adjustment. I’m going to play with the chrony tomorrow before it gets up to 100. It’s SUMMER in SC!

A question, if I may. Watching the very good DVD which came in the package, I noticed that the breech cover/ breech block closed completely on the demo rifle. Mine does not. It closes far enough to move to the side and lock and the rifle fires. Any problem with it not closing completely??

Took a couple of shots and the loudest thing I could hear was the tank “ping” and the pellet impact. And this from stock!!

Appreciate any info on the breech. Thanks in advance.

I’ve never tried filling mine past 3K, but my stock tank has never been a problem at that. In fact, the first 5 shots or so are usually a little hot. Mine is an older tank/valve, date stamp is 2/01. I’ve heard others talk about bottoming out their top hats, that’s another problem I’ve never had. My current setup is a 17+” .20 cal. barrel, TH @ .040″, PW @ 1. Not sure what the velocity is, haven’t chronied it since I changed everything around last night. Previous setup was an 18″ .177 barrel, TH was at .034″, PW @ 1, JSB Exacts were averaging ~920 fps. Later.

That top hat setting seems a little high to me. I have mine set a .072″ PW at 5, and I am getting 840 fps with 15.9 gr JSB Exacts. 3000 psi fill, after 30 shots tank is down to 2500 psi.

Your SS shoots good filled to 3000 psi? My valve barely opens at 2900, so I’ve never bothered to even try 3000. My top hat is around .080 I believe.

Amazingly yes. It even shoots alright at 3200. At 3000 psi the first shots are around 820 fps with JSB’s.

I’ll find out tomorrow morning. Filled off my SCUBA tank this afternoon, letting everything cool down and stabilize. Gauge read 3000 on the nose. By the time I get set up, it may be a little higher. Have a few LSB Exact 15.9’s (which aren’t, really) and I’m just going to shoot them all and see what happens.

52,

Thanks. I’ll try again.

Shado, you were right, partially. As set up initially, the power WAS down…a little. In the 770’s with LSB Expresses at 14.5 grains. And the noise WAS lower than my Walther LG300 Dominator.

Did some fiddling this morning before it got nasty out there. Right now the temp is 84, the dew point is 69 and there is no wind. Eased the top hat up slowly, shooting a short string over the chrony. Ended up with the TH at 0.085. PW still at 4. % shot string averaged just over 810 fps (21 ft lbs) with a standard deviation of 2.64! And it IS louder. Much more of a sharp crack. I’m getting a good sound relection off my back stop.

Anyone suggest any more tinkering with the TH or should I be satisfied with what I have?

This evening or tomorrow morning I’ll get this lovely lady sighted in and start testing some different pellets. Let you know how things go.

P.S. I’m even more in love.

Take the end cap off, now thats LOUD! 😯

Ahhh, maybe you have it turned down so much it isnt making much power? That would explain why it is so quiet. A stock SS is allot quieter than a Condor or Talon but it by no means silent. My stock SS, when fired in the garage at night, wakes up my daughter up on the second story of the house. I know this as she came out to ask me WTH was all the noise was. Its not as loud as a 22 firearm going off, which Ive heard a Conder is that loud, but its pretty close.

Bottom out the top hat? I turned mine down to .050″ I didn’t think it was possible to bottom it out.

I may be very lucky or just deaf. Don’t know which. I DID turn the top hat in to appx. 0.070″ (it’s bottomed out on the threads) and had the power wheel set at 4. Don’t know if that is the best set up or not. Have to get out with the chrony tomorrow and hope nothing melts.

If anyone is interested, I’ll post the results tomorrow after I stop sweating.

Wow, you must have th magic SS then ). It took allot of work to get mine like that.

Mine does not close flush with the top hat either. What’s important is when closing the breech you should feel an increase in resistance on the last ~1/8” of travel. That’s the O-ring slipping over the top hat forming a seal. After using it awhile you’ll notice a little oil residue build up where this seal takes place.

For fine tuning the top hat and power wheel check out this thread: http://talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=249

Hi Abe,

Your almost making me wish that I didn’t take the family to the beach this weekend and come over there to shoot with you. Your going to make me jealous when we get together.

Glad to hear that your new toy is already making you a happy guy.
