Q:

JSB 18.13 gr pellet spiral, help please

Guys, I’m have trouble with pellet spiral with the JSB 18.13 out of my Veteran 22 short. Avg speed is 885 fps, it seems that 4 or 5 out of 10 are spiraling pretty consistently from all of my 3 mags. Groups aren’t that bad 1/2 or 3/4 at 50 yds, but I can see the spirals. You think its because of weight inconsistency of pellets or speed too high? At what speeds with this pellet are you getting best accuracy? By the way I’ve made no adjustments to the HST or regulator since I got the rifle 6 months ago, prolly 1,500 to 2,000 down the barrel since then.

Thanks, :4:

Remember that after you clean, even if it’s with dry patches, it sometimes takes a few rounds for the groups to tighten back up.

Wingman, Thanks for your help. The spiraling is not all that violent, as groups are within the 1″ measurement at 50. Before doing any thing too indepth, I’m going to shoot at 75 yds to see what those groups look like. Then throughly clean barrel and more shooting at 50, 75 yds to see if a difference. I’ll shoot the groups with my DonnyFL Sumo installed then un-installed to see what happens. Thanks for everyone’s feedback. I’ll keep you posted. FYI won’t be able to do this until next week.

Cheers. :4:

There are two different types of pellet spiraling, the faster tight circular wobble that only alters its center axis by about 1′” at 50 yards, is caused by speed v/s twist rate incompatibilities with that particular pellet or minor bore leading.

The second more violent corkscrew spiral that seems to randomly change course can be caused by:

# pellets head size too big for the bore/choke
# a dirty bore often with a lot of flakey leading in the choke,
# a damaged/shaved pellet from clipping,
# bolt to bore misalignment
# a burr on the transfer port

Give your bore a good scrub with Boretech rimfire blend and a bronze brush then patches till clean. Pay particular attention to the choke.
Try a different batch of pellets.

Mughram, Thanks and will try that too.

remove the silencer ” shroud” and check without it

KyPop, Thanks for reply. I do clean occasionally maybe not often enough. I’ll try that and see what happens. Any thoughts from others?

I seem to have that same problem with my .22 standard mutant occasionally. I’m shooting 18.13 JSB at 890fps. Most of the time a quick cleaning of the barrel gets me back on track. :2cents:
