.20 cal. Preliminary data
Got a .20 cal. barrel from Chimp in trade awhile back, but have been too busy to do much shooting with it. Plus, I seem to burn through pellets faster than anticipated, so I keep running out of ammo :-). Anyway, got a couple of tins of Kodiaks, and finally made some time today to actually shoot it. At first, I was having some issues with consistency. I’d get 2 or 3 in the same hole at 30 yards, then it would shift, and the next couple would go in the same hole, but a 1/4″ away from the first ones. I had been shooting my 18″ .177 barrel, had the TH way down, only .034″. Turned it up for the .20, at .040″ I was getting mid 800’s. Still inconsistent. Then it finally dawned on me, the consistency got worse the lower the velocity went. Jacked the TH up to .050″, better, velocity right at 900 fps, but still a little erratic. Went to .060″, velocity in the low/mid 900’s, and now this thing was getting impressive! I shot half a dozen consecutive really tight 5 shot groups, one holers or damn close to it, all at 30 yards. Of course, by now I’m running low on ammo again, so I decided to stop for now. I think it could stand even more velocity, maybe take the TH to .070″ or so, see if I can get Kodiaks close to 1000 fps. So for now, the setup is TH @ .060″, PW @ 2, Kodiaks averaging about 925 fps and grouping at 1/4″ at 30 yards. BTW, it absolutely HATES JSB Predators at any velocity. Kodiaks were going in one hole, I couldn’t keep Predators inside one inch. Anyone need a nearly full tin of .20 Predators?
I still have more testing to do with this barrel. It’s NOT an Air Force barrel, not sure about the details, maybe Chimp will chime in and fill in the blanks. I’m thinking this is going to be a really good barrel for high velocity with the heaviest pellets available. I had a few CP’s, they did very well, I’ve got a box on order right now. I think I screwed up, I should have ordered a tin of EJ’s and instead I ordered some light weights. Oh well, maybe I’ll get lucky. Guess that’s it for now, more later, when my pellets get here. Later.
