Q:

New member, new R3M short.

About a month ago I found out that Ernest had a couple R3M .22 shorts and since I have been wanting to try an EDgun for a while I picked one up. It didn’t shoot very well to begin with but after some messing around it shoots pretty good now. I think there is still room for improvement especially with the ES.

At first it was shooting almost 2 inch groups at 45-50 yards with Jsb 18.1 but would shoot pretty well (under 1 inch) with the 15.9 so I thought it couldn’t be clipping but after swapping to DonnyFl’s 1/2-20 unf baffles (with larger diameter holes in the baffles) the 18.1’s are more accurate than the 15.9’s so maybe it was clipping??? I now get the occasional .5 inch group at 50 but usually a flier messes me up. The gun almost has 2000 pellets through it so I am thinking about opening the reg up to clean the belleville stack. I would like to lower the reg to 120bar also but not sure If Im up for that just yet.

Anyway I figured I would stop lurking and join the forum and maybe I can learn something. I’d also like to thank Brian (EDgun West), Greg (GKU) and Donny for answering my questions and giving me advice on my Edgun. And thanks for the O ring kit Greg, it will be put to good use soon!

I really want to just shoot the damn thing but if I know it’s not shooting it’s best then it will just bug me until I figure out what the issue is.

Like many of us as well feel what you’re thinking, but ………..

Don’t go fixing something up and break something that wasn’t broke.

FuXing it up, just joking with yah. :biggrinn:

I thought I would have to disassemble mine to take the baffles off at first but it came off quite easily (pretty much the same as Ernest’s video). They must have cooled it a little when tightening stuff at the EDgun factory lol.

You could rebuild the reg if you like.
To be honest I never rebuild my Matadors reg …… mines is factory still.

I did rebuild my new Lelya 20 cal because it wasn’t regulating.
Left the setting alone just unscrewed the washer section only to change the 2 small O-rings out and all others I encountered on the ways.

Initially to install the Offset mod I removed the barrel assemble to loosen the factory torque was out of this world tight on mines !
There after I made small tweaks to the bolt over time with it completely assemble …. no scope on …… holds together everything better IMO.

Remounted the Optically Centered Scope back on and checked old reference POI improvement(s) …….

The string looks pretty normal? I have heard others say after cleaning all the factory grease out their ES dropped to like 9fps, some even less. That said I don’t want to go messing with it if thats as good as it gets for now. I’ve shot just under 2000 pellets through it so far (counts rising everyday).

Yup Donny’s adapter is steel, I actually checked it with a magnet before I put it on. I did notice that if I zero at say 25 yards, when I shoot out to 50, 75 and even shot some tin cans at 135 yards my poi was always a little to the left. I’m guessing I torqued it back on a little too much and caused the frame to twist a little? Was planning on taking the upper apart when I cleaned out the reg so I can use moly on the baffle nut threads and surface where the nut turns on the shroud when tightening like you described in your R3M thread.

Also noticed that the “barrel cover (part between the rear breech and shroud that the pic. rail bolts too) on my gun can move around some because the ID is a bit larger than the barrel OD. When I torqued the baffle up at first It raised up the rear so I had to loosen it again and made sure to hold it so it lines up with the rear breech again. Hard to explain as I don’t know exactly what the parts are called but I can take a picture if needed. If that piece moves it would change where the scope sits in relation to the bore though….

.

Chrony seems pretty much what I’ve seen ….. reg needs about 2-3k shots to settle.
How many shots total did you fire so far ?

I believe all Matadors reg are factory set/Ed to 130 bar, lowering it may decrease its air efficiency.
Increasing it will require a harder/heavier hammer spring tension, in turn lessen its life of the valve stem.

Also some info, DonnyFl’s 1/2-20 unf baffles are made of steel right, that so it’s a good thing …. magnet check to see ?
But if you ever go back to OEM or EdGuns off set mod is aluminum, add a steel washer on the barrel nut to reduce friction when torquing it.
This will greatly reduce the twisting on the frame ………. which can cause canting/lateral error.

When I bought my Matador to save some money for pellets I had to make the Degasser Tool / Puller (Thank You, Strietwise !)

Don’t take much effort to degas turn it slowly …….. cover the TP with a towel and wear a full face mask is not a bad idea too.

Thanks Donny! Thanks for the tip shooter, I didn’t think to push a pellet through the bore when I had the breech off. I’ll have to try that the next time I am cleaning the barrel. Greg, I’m too lazy to make my own de-gasser lol. I did cheap out and buy the small one (mostly because I can keep it right in the gun case with some spare o rings.

Here is a 40 shot string I shot yesterday with AA 18 grain pellets/200bar fill:

Time to clean and re-grease the reg? Does anybody know how much I need to adjust the reg to get to 120bar? Or a good set point for the .22 short to get consistent 885-890 with 18.1’s?

Beautiful gun! I always kick myself in the ass for not getting a .22 R3M. It was my first pcp and I thought the .25 would be good for my backyard but just too powerful. Congrats on the great gun and thank you for giving my adapter a try.

Thanks Greg and thanks for the link! I need to order a de-gassing tool so maybe I’ll pick up a tin of the EDgun pellets too.

That is mighty fine advice coming from shooter3 …..

Make sure to clean the barrel when testing out diferant lot batches, shoot a mag or so to lean in.
They’re times when a assuminly good pellet can ride on a crappy pellet batch lead in to inciendtly become very accurate till the lean in wears. Load up and shoot the other for a bit and the other will return in accracy once more.

Also that is 2 good looking degasser tools, but you can also make one … mines is ugly.

Clean the barrel and then try to push a pellet through it with a cleaning rod. You should feel the same resistance all way down to the muzzle and then a light choke at the end.

Thanks Greg and thanks for the link! I need to order a de-gassing tool so maybe I’ll pick up a tin of the EDgun pellets too.

Brian and that Donny, don’t listen to them they’re a bad influence. …. look what happen to me.

Also did you try EdGun pellets, said to be JSB but with better consitency.
