Is the Mutant Short still a thing?
In other words is it still in favor with it’s owners?

I miss a few of those guns, but someone else is putting them to good use. Better than me anyway.
As for the pustol’s scope, it’s an inexpensive Winchester 2x7x32 with a duplex reticle. Cost less than $30.00 on Amazon. The glass is surprisingly clear, and I got whay I paid for; it never left 7x because the reticle drifted when I used the zoom ring. Also, it’s the second such scope on the gun. I had one on another pistol which I sold, so a spare. These are chesp scopes. The internals failed on the firsy one so the reticle dropped and could not be raised. I look for this one to fail one day. I’ve become used to the duplex reticle, so not too bad at holding over or under inside of 35 yards which is where the pistol works best for me. I don’t recommend it for serious work.

PS I mean to say I don’t recommend the Winchester scope for serious work. The pistol is quite capable for taking small pests. I use either the AA 10.3 Heavy or the JSB 10.34 Heavy pellets. The trajectory is a bit loopy, but the pistol’s accuracy with either of these is very good.
Also, I clipped 2.5 coils off the hammer spring to flatten the shot curve; that and the BStaley mod seem to work well.

Thank you for the assist with my pictures. I’d been on this journey with airguns, kind of finding my way towards that epitome airgun which would meet my specific needs. Well, the needs changed a bit and I eventually searched for the handiest PCP I could find. Well the Shorty met just about every criteria. It’s even shorter than my Crosman 1701P carbine. Along the way I was tuning the guns in trying to attain the flattest shot string I could manage. The Logun S-16 was the most difficult, with it’s complicated internals.
As for the Prod, I had one of those too. I put a Marauder barrel on it; a link to that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEbVmWK5tPg IIRC, the Prod barrel liked the larger pellet head size so it grouped best for me with the H&N domed Field Target Trophy pellet/14.66 grain. I think I was shooting 5.53mm head size. In the video you can see the tin on the shooting table.
So now the Crosman, the Phoenix and the Short are the only guns I own. The latter two will be converted back to capital.The Crosman has dropped a squirrel dead at 25 yards, plus numerous Sparrows. That’s my shooting environment these days. Mainly the Sparrows and Starlings, (and the occasional Grackle that seems to want to use my car as a territorial marker, otherwise they get a pass).

PS as for my Short being able to shoot 1000 fps, it’s a Petr-bilt special. I’m told that elongated barrel port has something to do with it, and maybe he set the regulator pretty high? I’ve never been able to get a handle on tuning it. I”ll review the tips you gave me a few months back to see if I can finally sort that out. It will be a good time to pull it out and check to see if it’s holding pressure too. I know the hammer spring is OEM, from comparing mine to Endo’s (he has a Petr-bilt Short too).
The only way I would buy a 30 caliber is if Veteran made one in a shorty or even a stranded ,

I had a Prod, did the same BStaley/3 O-Rings mod a while back and wanted to turn it into a Micro Pup but I couldn’t get the gun to shoot consistently tight groups.

The last of my trio is the Crosman 1701P Silhouette PCP pistol, in .177. I have/do tinker with this pistol a lot. Mainly I’ve swapped transfer ports, and done the BStaley mod which places a high durometer o-ring inside the sleeve which the hammer travels to strike the valve stem. The o-ring reduces hammer bounce, and so improves shot-to-shot consistency. I also added the Crosman carbine handle, then added the shroud and forearm assemblies from the Crosman 2100T air pistol. So now this little carbine is quiet, and quite deadly; dead squirrel deadly at 25 yards, tested and approved! :biggrinn:

I try and rotate my guns each week, Weather has been changing a little bit getting down inn the 40s at night , So its sparrow season for me 177 vulcan shines , But my all time best go to guns are my Mutant 22 and Veteran 25 shorty’s , Because of the extra power my Cricket 22 and 25 is just a cunt hair behind,
The only way I would buy a 30 caliber is if Veteran made one in a shorty or even a stranded ,

Greg, You’re living the life, man. :biggrinn: Cycling your collection; I must admit it sounds more interesting than what I’m doing. I’m down to three PCP airguns now. The most unique, and least used in my collection is my Parkre-Hale Phoenix/.22. It’s sub-FAC, at less than 11.5 fpe, but it’s nicely accurate for taking pests. I fill it to 2800 psi and get 55 consistent shots. Here’s a link to a video I did on the first one I owned (I’d bought it used from AoA, and needed to send it back for repair. I believe AoA only imported 12 samples so as the only imported, it’s a rare gun. Anyway I sent it back for repair. Steve and Kip gave it a try, then decided to send it back to England on their dime, but ran into some sort of shipping issue. Soooo…AoA sent me a new replacement!) It’s the one I have now I used to have a thing for quirky British airguns, including the Logun S-16. For me the trick to shooting more is to find more places to shoot/pest.
But if ones a paper puncher that for me can get boring ….. … really quickly.
My Shorty does max 820 fps with 18g …… man, I can’t see how you’re getting 1000 fps out of your Shorty ?
I shot cycle all 6 of my pups and seem to shoot my Cricket 22 std the least.
It depends and could take me awhile for one cycle to occur sometimes over a year’s time, then again it’s been done within a week.
I love 22 cals and shot them the most, 177 is next and the 25 cals shot seldomly usually paired up with a 22 at close hand.
Have been working/repair/maintaining my Morini 162EI match pistol which I like to bring with me to the farms when I’m pesting.
If I need to put something out of it misery close up and personal it’s a quicker pull !
It’ll be 4 am soon … .. and where’s my lunch .. . going pesting in an hour. :4:

I’d been checking back into this forum from time to time, and began to get the impression that the shine had faded from the Short. As you, I shoot mine from time to time. I’ve seen the intervals between those times grow larger and larger. Then, my shooting time has become more restricted as well; so much so that I’ve had thoughts to sell my Short and other air guns. :sadn: Then I pull the Short out, and handle it a bit, and again see why I was so attracted to it in the first place. It’s extremely handy, has the best trigger of any airgun I’ve ever owned (many over the years), is mechanically smooth to cock, and has that great drop-in magazine-loading sequence. Mine has Petr’s mystery barrel with the elongated barrel port, and is very accurate (same barrel-making process used by LW, per Petr). In all aspects it’s a very fine example of a well thought-out design. And it’s short enough too! I’m amazed the gun can shoot at high velocity too. I’ve seen it run past 1000 fps on the chronograph.
Still, with my restricted shooting it’s joined my other two closet queens, which somehow seems cruel and wasteful. That’s my story,atm. I hope it will change for the better. But it made me ask the question in the subject line. I just wondered. Glad to see that you sill draw yours out and exercise it from time to time.

Wow and I have not even had a drink yet, Maybe after a couple it will make since . I am sure I did not cut my what behind.
The Crickets are the power kings, I know there is a power tune for the Veterans/Mutants I just have not had the balls to try it.
