homemade air compressor idea
i had an idea for an air compressor (kinda hillbilly idea). i have a 37 ton log splitter with 24″ stroke and 15 sec cycle time. i also have an 3″ hydrolic cylinder 12″ long Compressed. i took and mounted the cylinder in the log splitter and just compressed it with a gauge on it and it got to 600 psi but there is a lot of dead space at the end of the stroke about an inch. i could take the cylinder apart and fix that and make good brackets for holding it in place. i was thinking with one way valves i could make the pull stroke precharge the the compression stroke. and it would have a lot of volume. what do you guys think? anyone tried something like this? hey and the splitter/compressor is sorta portable just have to pull it with my f150.

You are describing a pressure amplifier.
So if you made some headspace reductions, and did the two stage compressor mod to that cylinder and then fed it from a shop compressor or a depleted air tank you would be able to build pressure like crazy.
That 600psi you did was likley with one stroke so that is pretty darn good.
Maybe check it out with a tank attached and see what you can build it up to in a couple strokes.

A couple people here have made that idea work.
It shouldnt be any taller than the pump is now when extended.
I was just thinking about how I could make a compressor out of the handpump by adding a large wheel and a drive link (link an old train) and a little gear on a motor to turn the large wheel. I would be kinda tall and slow but would save a lot of effort with the handpump. It would need to go slow to prevent the pump from get heat damaged…..
It should work out no problem. There are commercial high pressure pumps that use hydrolic rams just like that, although allot smaller in scale.

yes i know what an air pressure amplifier is i accually looked into on as an alturnitive to a compressor but they to are expensive to because they are pretty much custom built for you. and they also, a lot of times have to have pretty high starting pressures. that is where i kinda came up with the idea. i think all i need is a few one way valves and i should be good, has anyone tried this. and what kinda compression ratio do you need to get to 2700 psi?
