Talon SS C02 Questions (I have searched)

New guy here. I have a few half decent airguns and many firearms. I do not, however, have any PCPs or in this case a larger high end C02 airgun.

I have a few questions before I make the plunge and I would really appreciate any input you folks might have.

All of the below relate to the Talon SS .22 on C02 (stock)

1-How loud is it in relation to say a RWS 46 (Stutzen) or CZ Slavia? I am not looking for power 500-600 fps is plenty for my needs. I primarily want quieter then my RWS 46.

2-Is the 20 oz tank too big for actual scoped shooting?

3-The C02 tanks do not come with any kind of buttpad. Does this interfere with shooting? Are there buttpads that can be used?

4-I assume I should be able to get a good 150-200 shots easy out of the 12 oz tank at the ranges I am looking at (50′ ish) Is this a correct assumption. The 20oz tank should easily get 500-600, correct?

5-Are the C02 tanks durable and able to sit filled for long periods of time? I plan on getting two or three additional to have on hand.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my likely answered 10,000 times already questions. I did do some searching but couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for.

Believe it can group at 50yards…but the co2 version seems much more hold sensitive than the PCP version. On a guess, it’s barrel time….there is a lot happening between trigger pull and barrel exit, and going slower (which co2 does) gives all that monkey-motion more time to jiggle the gun. My “cure” is to shoulder the rifle firmly, hold the fore end firmly, and just barely rest my hand on the grip. If shooting from a rest, will still do the above, but rest the rifle on the bag at the REAR of the fore end (just ahead of the trigger guard).

May not work for you…but do try differnt holds, different points for the bag rest.

This is from a 5mm Talon SS on co2…loafing along at just under 600fps (14.3gr. pellets). Really have to work at it…will toss a flier at the slightest shift in hold or rest change.

I have shot about 3,500 rounds thru this gun now. I started getting good groups at 40yds. I’m getting 1/2″ groups. This is on co2 not air (as my fine air force pump is broke already). I tried 5o yds but the co2 does not have enough zip to get a pattern at 50 yds. I just don’t know if the barrel was to tight or what but it seems to be shoot well now.

Got my pump and put my talon ss on compressed air and got a 1″ group at 40 yds. Put it back on co2 and bact to the 4″ pattern at 30 yds. can’t hit anything at 40 yds. I used crossman primer heaveys.

The restriction at 11″ (1 inch from the muzzle) would be the “choke” and is normal. The other two restrictions are not normal. does either seem to coincide with the location of the barrel bushings? possibly the bushing screws were overtightened at the factory thus creating tight spots in the barrel (possibly need to send bbl back to AF for replacement). Still no luck getting any tight group. tried crosman premier pellets .177 and the best I could get is a 3″ group at 20 yards.

Here was my next step. I took the 24″ .22 cal barrel out of my Condor. Put it in the Talon ss. Took the 12″ .177 cal barrel out of the Talon ss and put it in the Condor. got a 2″ group with the Condor and a the Tallon ss with the .22 cal 24″ barrel was 1/2″ group at 20 yards.

I’m thinking that either the 12″ .177 barrel is bad and not the the gun it self.

I bought the co2 option for my .177 ss- infact i bought it that way. Although I do have a chronograph. This is what I’ve noticed- co 2 with that big bad condor valve is a litte more partial to lighter pellets -keep the power wheel at about 4 max- over that is pointless. beeman trophy pellets cruise at around 620-640 and I have had no problems with accuracy. But I a have seen toward the very end of my tank charge is a couple of inconsistent shots at 30 feet pellets would flare out to about .5″ groups would be about an inch and a half accross- are you using a scope or open sights. If open sights then okay- if moderatley scoped then the cause should be investigated a little further. 8)

You might want to take your barrel out of the gun and push a pellet through from the breech end out the muzzle. What you are looking for is an area of restriction as you push the pellet. In the past mistakes have been made and the choke of the barrel was at the breech end and not the muzzle.

Stuff happens.

If every thing is checking out try another pellet. Something is causing it. Some detective work is in order.

checked the screws all good
changed out the scope for the one on the Condor. Condor still driving tacks at 60 yards.
check barrel with qtip no cotton left in barrel.
rested on forarm
used jsb pellets. going to get other pellets
used 2 different co2 adapters and 4 different co2 bottles
at 20 yards still shotting all over the paper
I’m going to get my pump this week so I can charge my air tank and try that.

Take a look at a few things.

Make sure the all 4 barrel set screws are snug.
Double check the scope to make sure it is not the culprit.
Look at your crown and run a qtop inside the tip of the barrel. If any cotton comes off the qtip the crown might be the problem.
Clean your barrel. And then shoot a dozen shot through it before testing accuracy to prep the barrel.
Use crosman priemere, Kodiak, JSB to test the accuracy.
Be sure you are only lightly cradling the gun and only brace the gun when shooting on the forearm.

Try those things then check back and let us know how it is doing.

If it is half as quiet as a 46 bone stock then I think I am good to go. That 46 has quite a crack to it and it is past the diesaling phase.

One more quick question. Converting to PCP is as simple as buying a tank and pump and removing the C02 conversion valve, correct?

Ok, actually two with springers drying firing with no back pressure is a no no. What about with PCP or C02? Not that I can see a need for dry firing with a tank attached but I am curious.

dry firing a CO2 or PCP is no problem provided they are gassed up.
can cause troubles if the hammer hits the valve stem of an empty gun where the hammer hits the valve body.That peens the valve material tight onto the stem so that is bad. If the gun has air/gas in it then no troubles.

Think of your paintball tank with CO2 adapter interchangeable with a regular Airforce tank. So either can be used allowing for selection of power levels desired.
