Gamo .22 PBA Ammo
I was looking at ammo at PyramidAir today and I noticed that Gamo is now making their Performance Ballistic Alloy ammo in .22 caliber. It is very light at just 9.9 grains. Has anyone tried this ammo? If so can you give us a report on its accuracy?
I have been told that the .177 caliber PBA is so light that it breaks springs in spring guns. I also noticed that in our Hunting section there is a post, “Way Too Friendly” by Spyonu2007. Here he demonstrates the effectiveness of the .177 caliber PBA on a rabbid racoon. He beaned the racoon from 75′; a respctable headshot! It was an efficient one-shot kill with great wound ballisics as demonstrated by his pictures. Kudos Spyonu2007! 😀

The 5.1 gr PBA ammo would make just over 45 ft. lbs at 2000 fps. It might be possible to get it that fast considering some make near 100 FPE from .25s. Not as much surface area to work with or barrel time. It would be a huge waste of air and barrel. Wouldn’t hit the side of a barn.
I would like to see one of these uber-beefed up condor’s that launch .25 eun jins at over 1000fps put on a .177 barrel and shoot pba ammo. I wonder if we could get a pellet gun shooting over 2000fps…
Rob you are a gentleman. That is a very nice thought. I actually have some in .177. I was more interested in the .22’s. I don’t own a .177 caliber HPA, or pnuematic gun that could shoot the pellets as they were designed to be shot. My .22 caliber SS is powerful and I was wondering how they would perform being shot from it. As it was pointed out to me, the goal is to use a heavy pellet around 900 fps. Again, thanks for the input.
Steve, I looked around to see if I still had more of them but I didnt, that or I cannot find them in my junk. Was going to send some out to you to try. (.177 though).
I do remember testing them in my RWS34 though… Since I was going to replace the innards in it anyway, I decided if the pellets broke it, I’d be losing nothing. I recall they were actually accurate in that gun, but I had to lube them with Krytek to get them to group. POI was so high though that I’d have to adjust by up to 8 inches at 30 yards and since I didnt have many of them, I didnt bother.

I have tested the PBA “Butt plug” ammo fairly extensively and have found it to be pretty well worthless. Accuracy just was not there in the majority of my guns and when it was there, it was of no advantage over lead.
I tested knockdown power of the pellets in a crude way at some point as well.. found the post…
Did a little testing today on knockdown power at range. For this test, I chose my AAS400C. It’s a 12fpe gun and laser accurate. I chose this gun over a springer because precision was needed for my test and I didn’t want any recoil so I could see precisely where I was hitting the spinner.
I put out the spinner target at 25 yards. The spinner has 2 paddles that are 3 inches and one paddle that is 1 1/2 inch in diameter. My goal was to test different pellets by hitting as close to the center of the middle paddle and see how many times it would spin.
I took 5 shots with each pellet, unless I made a bad shot (PBA’s were a bit difficult to hit dead center) and counted the spins. Here are the results.
JSB Express…. Almost 3 complete turns
Gamo Rocket…. 3 full turns
CPL ……….. Almost 3 turns
CPH………… 4 full turns
Gamo PBA… 1/2 turn
edit…….forgot about Predators……. 3 full turns ….end edit.
I tried several more times with the PBA’s to see if I could at least get a full turn, but never could get more than 1/2 turn.

I suppose if you needed a bit more penetration on a critter such as an armadillo, the PBA’s might be of consequence… or if you were going after sparrows or such with a low powered pistol, but far as I can tell, the PBA’s are pretty well crap.
I sure wouldnt try them in any of my good springers.
If you were just hunting sparrows and starlings you could adjust it to conserve alot of air while having enough speed to reach the bird before it flies off. You’d have a fair trajectory and a TON of shots. IF the accuracy was there. Am I right?
i think their (gamo) pba ammo is just for sales because most informed air gunners know that the highest speeds are not always the best. most people around here want to get the heavest pellet going just under the speed of sound, so the have high fpe. and good accuracy. you don’t want to break the sound barrier or accuracy suffers. i would tell you not to waste you money, i personally have not tried them, but i am sure they are junk. (and over priced) get some cp’s, or beeman fts if you want a lighter pellet. stick with lead. 😀

Very inaccurate. Worst BC on the market! Starts super fast, and sheads velocity ( and energy) like it had a drag chute attached. Great for very weak guns at 10 yards. Usless in ours.
