Q:

Hunting for an RWS Model 54

I’ve been wanting one of these for at least 10 years.
I have the 48 model and have wanted to try the 54, recoilless but just couldn’t part with the $$$ to get one. Finally I decided to start searching on the WEB for the best price. Most returns were in the $650.00+ range…too much for me.
Cobra.Air.com Had them listed for $525.00, which I felt was pretty fair considering my efforts to date. This was as of 07/29/2008.
So..TODAY, 07/30/2008, I finally decide to order the RWS 54 from Cobra, and what do I find? ….They have raised their prices…to $631.70. My response was WTF OVER?
I was told from their staff, that RWS called them DIRECTLY and stated that they were selling their product TOO low and to increase their prices accordingly. Frustrated at this point, I was able to find it at A.O.A. for $515.00 which I paid and am happily awaiting it’s arrival. I wasn’t happy with the $30.00 shipping fee but still a reasonable price over all.
Kind of like Rolex watches..artificially inflated prices.

Spyder,
I purchased a RWS Model 54 during my quest for power that led me to my TSS. I got a tip to call Umarex direct at 479-646-4210 and ask for Ryan at x 27, or Glenn at x 17. Ryan was a pleasure to deal with. I bought a re-furb that looked like a brand new gun for…$426. I returned it after I almost took off the end of my finger with the cocking lever. I guess that I am just too dumb to own such a complicated piece of airgun art. (I know Rob, you’re rolling your eyes and thinking what an idiot!) It also wouldn’t break 800 fps with CP’s, or Super Domes. It was beautiful and HEAVY! But it just wasn’t for me. Oh ya, I did not come with an instruction manual. That might have helped.

Good luck!

Just a quick follow-up.
A.O.A. has raised their price on this model (RWS 54) to $539.00
As of 7/31/2008.

Scope… despite the 54 being recoilless to the shooter, the scope does catch hell. You’ll need a good springer rated scope for it.

If you are looking for a budget scope, I’d suggest a Leapers TS series. If you want the best bang for the buck, the Bushnell Legend 5x15x40 is tops. The Elite series would be a next step up, that or a Weaver V16.

I bought my AA410 a couple years ago for $600. Now they are $900. Glad I finally got one before they took off. A couple of years before I got it they where $475

Thanks for the support Guys.
Just hate getting burned on a Rifle that 3 years ago was far less in cost.
Still…Looking forward to it’s arrival.
Most of my shooting is well within 50 yards.

Any tips on a GOOD scope?

Good point by WOK… if you plan on target shooting or doing a lot of bench shooting, the 54 is your gun.

Not a great carry or field gun. It’s not so much the weight as the weight distribution. My HW97LK weighs more than the 54, but it balances so much better. Even with a custom stock, my 54 doesnt have great balance to it.

Not to piss in your corn flakes on your new gun. They are extremely accurate and powerful for a springer, just a bit awkward to lug around.

That is a good price. $30 to ship is not horrible considering the thing wieghs as much as a TANK!

All European guns have went out of sight in recent years. Good for some who bought them before the hikes, but really sucks ass for those buying now.

You’ll like the 54. Great gun. I did a short review on it for the Writers Corner on the Yellow Forum.
