HOT CHEMICAL BLACKING
after taking a bunch of valve bodies to a company in sheffield to be chemically blacked, i decided to have a look round his workshop and asked a few questions about the process i also did abit of research on the internet and found a company in the UK who are willing to sell me the necessery chemicals to set up a blacking tank at home, its not that the process is expensive its just the inconvinience of having to stop what your doing and travel to sheffield and back and then go back again to get the parts when there ready, so here is a slideshow of the blacking process, i used a 12 inch stealth barrel which i cleaned up then soaked it in a mega clean solution then rinsed it then boiled it in a solution of blacking salts for 10 minuets, took it out and rinsed it again then gave it a coat of oil to get all the water off, click on slideshow to see process

great people to deal with too.
Done some cold blue but it wasnt worth the effort , chemical blacking worked well but i dont think finish was particuly tough.
……. So you left the intresting part out ! where did you buy it from and do they supply smaller quantities , as if i fit anymore in my shed there wont be room for me ! 🙁 . Living in sunny Norfolk chemical suppliers are thin on the ground Can you reheat and reuse blackner or is it meant to be used only once ?.
Cant be used on al’. I put a bit of tin foil over the remainder in a pan last night and it started to disolve it immediatley.
Good for taking of anodising.
cost is about £1.50 ($3) ish a kilo (2.2lb)

ive done tons of cold blueing , and most looks good but doesnt last . ive thought about hot black for a bit .
Is it ferrous metals only or will it work on Al?

hi yellow ninja, no, fifty pounds wasn’t enough i actually bought 112 pounds of blacking salts and a 112 pounds of mega clean, blodnobs having half of the chemicals because he wants to start blacking parts himself, so while i was on the phone ordering the salts, i thought i may as well get enough for both of us but just didn’t expect it to turn up in a articulated lorry

http://www.c-gchemicals.co.uk ask for Angie Groves in sales blacking salt cost about 86p a kilo, the cleaning solution costs about a pound a kilo, they did say they sell by the kilo but their chemist likes to know the size of tank you are using to calculate the amount of salts your likely to need.
