Q:

Top Hat Adjustment…How Touchy

In an attempt to understand just how critical it is when adjusting the Top Hat.
Ive devised a scale to measure it by. This is something that ALL men can relate to.
Isn’t it amazing how we can he.he.he, Inject sex into just about everything?
Anyway,
When it comes to adjusting the Top Hat.
Is it..”Under the shirt and Over the Bra sensitive?
Or, “Under the shirt and Under the Bra sensitive?”

Just trying to get a FEEL for what I should be attempting.
SORRY, couldn’t help that last pun.

Seriously, I am looking for an answer here and having a bit of fun at the same time.

If this is deemed,”Inappropriate” I do apologize.

You can get an ideal fill pressure with the hand pump too. Fill to 2900psi or 200 bar and start shooting over the chrony. velocity will start low and climb to a max and start back down. When velocity starts to drop, put the tank back on the pump for refill. Watch the needle while filling. first 8-10 pumps it will go up rapidly then stabilize and barely move for each pump. this is the current tank pressure. Add about 25 bar or 200 psi to that reading and that will be your ideal fill pressure for getting the most shots at best velocity. Between 3 guns i have 7 tanks and each valve performs better with a slightly different fill pressure, anywhere from 2400-2900psi. If it still starts off shooting too slow, reduce fill pressure slightly.

What a joy to find out that a gun prefers a LOWER fill pressure for BEST performance. Pumping effort is much reduced or if bulk filling, fill tanks last much longer.

Glad you found your problem.

Set the power wheel at 6 and see if it improves your shot count.

What I’m most interested in is.
Max fps
With the Power Wheel set to 4, I’m shooting around 475 fps.
With the Power Wheel set to 11, I’m shooting around 750 fps.
Tank pressure is between 2400 and 2900 psi, estimated after filling to 200 bar and shooting 10 rounds prior to measuring.

Sounds like TH setting is about right. Now shoot a string at each PW setting, 4 – 11 and look at the results. There will be a setting where the velocity gained per turn of the power wheel becomes diminishing. This will be your setting for most effecient air usage (most shots at best average power). example; from pw4 to pw5 gain 50fps, pw5 to pw6 gain 50 fps; from pw6 to pw7 gain only 25fps. Back off to 6.5 on the pw and that is your most effecient setting. above that you are using a lot more air for a little more velocity.

happy shooting

Good, sound advice.
I do believe I have stumbled onto my problem.
Starting with a Power Wheel setting of 4, I shot 645 fps.
Setting of 5 was 745 fps, setting 6 was 865 fps, 7 was 985 fps, 8 was 1065 fps.
Backed it down to a setting of 7.

It seems that filling the Tank to a level of 200 bar is a waste. At that level, my best fps, is about 750 with the P.W. set to 11.
At some lower psi level, it is shooting well over 1000 fps at a P.W. of 8.
Using an Air Force, hand pump and their bar dial read-out is no way to determine my current psi level in the Tank. Gotta scuba tank due any day now. Perhaps then I’ll be able to see what the most effective psi level is. It sure isn’t 3000psi.
Thanks for all the help.

It sure does, have you noticed a drop in psi used per shot? When I first got my SS I thought the 50 shots per fill I was getting was pretty weak, now it’s like the energizer bunny and saves my middle back the strain of slaving over the pump!

Here here is a snippet from my last test day…

20 shot run.
300 psi of air used or about 15psi per shot from a full tank.
Average velocity 935 fps w/ 10.5 grain crosman pellets in 0.177″ cal. (low 808fps, high 986fps)
Average power 20.5 ft-lbs w/ 18″ barrel .
Top hat at 0.061″ (factory set at 0.090″).
Powerwheel at 12 and 0 (basically as low as it will go).

I/m going to assume that 12 and 0 means that the indicator is all the way to the far LEFT, no pre-load to speak of.

Can’t say just where my psi level is. I use a hand pump with a bar scale, not psi and I run it up to 200 bar.
Using 43g pellets, my best fps is about 740 with the pre-load set as high as it will go > far right. Top Hat is right at .065.

The difference?

Factory set, 1500psi after about 50 shots…

Reset tophat until velocity began to change slightly.

50 shots and 2500psi in the tank…

Without a chrony your buying lots of dinners and not getting laid! 😆

I have a Crony, and have been playing with adjusting the Top Hat.
Making .002 changes in the gap from .070 to .060. I’ve seen about a 150 fps change over all.
Sound about right?
