Talon Valve questions.

In my quest for more power with my 18″ .22 Talon, I seem to have lost consistance at the expence of the power. My valve body has been ported, the valve stem opened to 3.0mm and a heavier hammer used. The power is up there if I want it but when it is tuned for max power it gets wild swings in fps from shot to shot and it seems that the volume of the stock tank can only handel 10-15 shots. With the top hat backed down, (Power wheel is always around 4) the consistancy comes back in terms of fps change between shot to shot but then I seem to get right to left hits.
Questions: Is it better to use a lighter hammer (stock) and set the top hat higher so that it is not bottoming out as I assume it does with the heavy hammer with lower high hat setting (causing the left right hits) and regulate the velocity (air) with a smaller opening in the valve stem? (I bought a few extra from Airforce just in case I needed them).
I thought that I wanted a ton of power but now all I want to be able to do is stick 20 shots through a quarter size hole the way I could before. (A little extra power would be nice if I could hit what I want and not have to cary an 80 cubic foot tank with me in the woods if you know what I mean)

I don’t long strings over the chrony. I shoot about 10 shots and then hit the field. In the field I am getting around 50 shot before POI changes enough for me to refill.

I run a stock hammer on my 16″ barrel and also have a moded talon valve.

Kodiak are shooting 855 fps

I use 21.1 kodiaks. Stock it pushed them about 760 fps, with the mods at max power it was up an unconttrolable 890. Now it is dropped down via the top hat to a more consistant 845 to 850. I can get almost 24 shots all within 15 fps but the top hat is bottoming out.
Where can you get a stronger valve spring or can you just tighten the spring retainer? right now you need about 13 to 15 pounds on the top hat to start moving it using the stock valve spring.

What pellets are you using?

Sounds like you are on the right track with figuring the cause of inconsistency. I would try a little stronger return spring in the valve. Should take the impact of the heavier hammer without bottoming out and make the valve close more consistently without sacrificing much of your newfound power and allow the TH to be set lower for reduced power/more shots without killing accuracy.
