The quest for lower power… again.
I started a similar thread some time back, perhaps even on the old site and fiddled around a lot with my tophat settings, etc to get a lot of shots…
I ended up with roughly 80 shots in .177 with a decent spread at around 14-15fpe.
Talked with Tony some time back about a restrictive spring retainer and have been testing it out… Good news and bad news…
Bad news first…. I am losing my touch with the hand pump!!!
Good news is obvious. With an 18 inch barrel in .177, I stopped chronying at near 90 shots… velocity using 7.9gr pellets was at a very, very consistent 940fps. PW set to 4 and tophat set… …in. A lot. Dont recall the measurement, but close to a RCH. I then turned the PW down to 1 and fired off at least another 30 shots to see what velocity would do and it was at a very, very consistent 918fps. 8)
I got tired of shooting after a bit and started to refill the tank. 200 bar fill down to 150 bar, just a touch over… NICE.
Mac1 was selling 12 inch .22 barrels a week or so ago for $25 or thereabouts, cheap enough that I got one to see what .22 12 inch would do with the spring retainer. Shot out several shots … 20 or so… and velocity is at 680fps with 14.3gr Premiers. High of 681 and low of 678… dont get much more consistent than that.
I dont know that I’ll be doing a complete string with it in .22 as I’m sure that it will shoot for a long time at that level. I’m thinking this will be a perfect 30 yard squirrel gun so long as accuracy is there, and I’ve no reason to believe that it’s not.
Thanks Tony…. definitely got a winner there for anyone looking to drop power in .177 to a reasonable level for a lot of shots and for .22 users who realize that sometimes less is more… *awaiting the jokes on that one*

update….
Put a 12 inch .22 barrel on the Talon with Anthony’s spring retainer…
680fps…. 50 shots later…. 679.9fps 25 shots after that…. 681fps….
So far, I am at over 75 shots with it and no more than a 4fps spread…. will keep going and see what I get. I’m only chronying ever so often and just enjoying shooting it.
