Any interest in having .22 and .25 airgun bullets made?
A buddy of mine who owns a Condor and as well has a full CNC shop is thinking of getting into making airgun bullets as he dislikes both the cost and limited range of skirted pullets due to the BC.
That said he is asking for a wish list of what would be preferred for the bullet design and is thinking of swaging as opposed to casting.
Here are my needs for my .22 and .25 Condor:
.22 and .25 choices
37 grain min
Bullet not pellet design (much like a lead rimfire bullet)
Now just need to determine the diameter in .22, 5.51, 5.52 what will work best in most .22 airgun barrels with 1 in 16 twist.
In .25 I am just thinking 6.35.
Now as far as the cost goes what would you be willing to pay per 100 rounds?

To make custom bullets is a little too hard in my opinion. If you want to shoot bullets then you guys in the states have easy access to Airguns of arizona. They have 3 bullets suitable for the condor. 2 from daystate and 1 from Eley. I tried to buy some Daystate’s but they were out of stock. Instead i bought Eley magnums 30gr, anf Theoben piledrivers 30 gr. I also tried some daystate rangemaster 29 gr pellets and also the prometheus TM2 17gr pellet.
now i was looking for a heavy weight accurate pellet. The piledrivers looked great but performed badly, i reckon i was lucky to get a 1 1/2 ” group at 25 metres. The Eleys produced regular sub 1″ groups, with an occasional one tighter, the rangemasters were equally impressive with 1″ to 3/4″ easily achieved. Mind you with a proper rest and setup both the eley and rangemasters will give 1/2″ groups at 25 meters or better. But the absolute standout pellet without doubt was the TM2 at 17 gr at 25metre produced ragged one hole groups. With a bench rest and a calm day i am sure 1’2″ groups at 50 metres are achievable and maybe even 1/4″ groups, and 1″ groups may be possible at the extreme range of 100 Metres.
What makes this pellet so good in my opionion was that not only did it shoot so well at 950FPS it produced group after group exactly the same as at 950FPS even when pushed to its MAX velocity of 1268 FPS in my gun ! This is the first pellet that i have ever shot supersonic that did not change accuracy. It is just as goodsupersonic as it is subsonic. It weighs 17gr and has a higher BC than other pellets. This in my opinion is the best long range pellet to use in a condor. If any guys can get 1400 FPS with this pellet it wil shoot well to 150 yards easy

Hunting at 300 yards with an airgun. That’d be cool. 🙂 What kind of energy (this is completely hypothetical of course) would a bullet have at 300 yards if it’s only going 1400fps and 50g? Probably not a lot…

Why not get a group order into one of these manufacturers here in the USA. Remington, Federal. CCI. Winchester. It should be do-able. Not a problem to size them down at all. For that matter, we could simply pull the bullets (In a safe manner), from .22 rim fire rounds. They are available in 29 gr. 32 gr. 40gr. all the up to 50+ gr. in sub sonic rounds. Then simply swedge down to .552 or .552.

I’ll be in line to buy an airgun, in .22 (50 grain projectile) that will place 5 rounds into a 3″ dia. circle at 300 yards, with a muzzle velocity of 1,400 FPS.
IMHO it will take more than a custom valve to accomplish that.

I have a bullet casting mould for a 55gr .224 bullet, sizable to .223 no problem. have thought about turning down a suitable powderburner bbl and trying them, just haven’t done it yet.

knifemaker was refering to a .22LR barrel – which are nominally .223, he wasnt refering to FMJ .223’s.
I have got a lathe and it would not be a problem for me to turn it down to fit in my rifle. I though the problem was with the twist rate, and velocity. Do they make .223 rounds that are not jacketed? I don’t think we would be able to push a jacketed bullet through the barrel.
I think it would be cool to get 98fpe out of a .25 at 45gr.

Even with the higher BC, 40 grain slugs are going to have a trajectory like a rainbow in most guns. 50 gr. even worse. What we need is a high BC bullet that doesn’t weigh a ton!
But wait, while trying to re-invent behind closed doors, if we will simply look outside the box for a moment, we will find that this is already being done.
Day State is having a manufacturer (IN The US) of all places, manufacture the Air Bullets for them. They are being shot in the highly successfully Air Ranger, and Air Wolf 80 FPE versions.. the guns are marketed as .223. A little large in diameter for our uses.

Another option is have any competent gunsmith turn down an existing .22 rim fire bbl.. to fit our guns. This would handle the .223 rounds just fine, as the rifling is already set up for these weights, and the velocities we are looking for.
All this would be MUCH cheaper than having bullets custom made. 15 bucks for 100? Try 20 bucks for 500 buying .22 rim fires by the brick. Should be even cheaper if someone can get one of the manufacturers to sell us just the un-loaded bullet as they do for Day State. Personally I would like to try a 29 gr. such as made for the .22 short. It would have a much better BC than a pellet and light enough to have a fairly flat trajectory. 😀
