Any recommendations on a decent flashlight?
I’m thinking of getting a bright, compact flashlight to mount on my gun, wondering what some of you guys are using, not really sure what to get right now. I know I would like the one that has the cord with the switch that I can put by the grip somewhere, for quick on/off. Do they come bright enough to easily see out to 25 yrds or so for target shooting in pitch black conditions?

Thanks for that Info. knifemaker. I have not seen that with my setup, but I only tested it on the cats in my area (and I did not shoot them) My scope was set at 16 power and the eyes looked just fine with the stock and LED lamps. But it’s not as dark as it would be like in the woods. It sounds like the is best to have both lamps on hand.
It helps to know that the lumen’s listed by surefire are beam lumen’s, where as all the other brands are lamp or bulb lumen’s. A Huge difference. Up to 45% to 65 percent. When you see lumen’s listed by other companies, divide by at least 45 percent. The Sure Fire products are hands down the best for long life. Their LED lights are much more color true as well.
I use a C-2 and or a M-3 wit Turbo head on mine. Both Sure Fire. I have LED lights, but I don’t use them on guns. The color distortion is too great. I have seen weird effects when using LED’s on guns as well. Especially at high magnification. Kinda like a Doppler effect. You can get several sets of eyes coming back at you, all super imposed, but shifted left, right, up or down. It can be impossible to tell which set of eyes are the real ones.
That doesn’t happen with standard light. Just LED’s. And no it isn’t the quality of the scopes. I use Zeiss, and high ends scopes. It is the color spectrum in LED’s not having as many colors in it that causes most of the problems.
In the c-2 I have on the SS now has the 120 lumen surefire bulb in it. It is at least 3 x brighter than the wally world Coleman. And full power is usable for much longer. AAA Batteries do fine for a few minutes and then go down hill fast. C123’s give full power to almost the end of their life.

Yeah, Y has you pointed in the right place. The 6P with the CREE LED works and last for some time. He helped hook me up and I love my setup. 😀
You will get a bit more run time out of CREE LED lamps, but keep in mind that at that color temperature details are harder to pick out to most folks eyes.
A rabbit bed-down in dead grass for example would be much more difficult to spot under LED light than under incandescent. Even at fairly close range.
As opposed to running 3 CR123s in my 9P I got two 17500 lithium ions and a charger. That combo ran about $25 for quality batteries, but will last thousands of charges. It’ll pay for itself in the long run.
In most quality flashlights like the 6P you can substitue the 2 CR123s for a single rechargeable 18650 li-on.
Don’t try putting li-ons in just anything.
The G Model also comes in LED style now to save money.
I have 2 flashlights
1: Surefire 6P-LED – Indestructable, Long Battery, touch pad is touchy.
2: Blackhawk Gladius – Its all about the strobe light. Flash that in a humans face and they get stunned and cant see a thing! Not LED though
Batteries last longer if you get an LED lamp upgrade (can be found on eBay for $20). I got a 6P with a CREE LED a year ago and still havent replaced the batteries – I only tend to light something up and take a shot so the time on is only a matter of seconds.
Batteries themselves can cost as little as $1 each from Surefire themselves and even less also on eBay.
I find the CR123 preform better at lower temperatures and have a much longer shelf life than regular AA or AAA’s – Unless you want to use Lithium AA/AAA’s and those can be just as expensive, if not more so than CR123’s.
Surefire is good but batteries are pricy & dont last long , Walmart has a led light that puts out 115 lumes & runs for 3 hrs on AAA batteries for 25.00 its the one on the right the colmen , Or if you want a surefire go with a G2 its cheaper than the 6p
it has 65 lumes for 60 mins & you can get a 120 lumen lamp option
I have both I use the one from walmart the most , I can light up cats eyes @ 100 yd

Check out SureFire 6P and 9P. They also have clones made by UltraFire which are pretty equivelent with exception of price. My 9P is good to about 100 yards for glowing eyes and what not.
If you want the ultimate in throw check out a Dereelight DBS or Tiablo A9. Now these I’m not sure would fit in 1″ rings but 30mm high rings would probably work. You’d definately need high because of the bezel diameter on these. Generally, the larger the bezel the further they throw. They’re good for about 200 yards.
