Q:

the .25 question

i have been trying to decide if i want to buy a .25 barrel. but i was always wondering if, you shoot a .22 32 grain ej at 55 fpe. what is the adventage of a .25 30 grain kodiak around to same power. to me i would think that wind drift diffrence would be small. or is .25 more efficient and would you get more 55fpe shots. i am not really intrested in any more power over 60 fpe. because that can kill good sized pest easy.

I think we’re getting a bit off track here. Edward was asking in his original post what the advantage would be in going 25 in 30 gr if you’re already shooting 22 32 gr. My theory is that there would be no advantage in that scenario, as the .22 in that weight would be better, even if the .22 was 30 gr, the same exact weight as the .25. So, if for some reason I was forced to pick between those choices, I’d pick the 32 gr .22. This seems to be more of a “what if” or hypothetical question more than anything else.

given EQUAL pellet weight and EQUAL velocity, the .22 would have an advantage in BC and carry energy downrange better.”

No one here is saying that shooting 25’s in 22 weights is a good thing, obviously there would be no advantage in that

Some real numbers –

My Condor went from shooting 28 Grain Eun Jins at 62 FPE with a .22 barrel to shooting 35gr Kodiaks at 86 fpe when I changed the barrel to a .25.

No other changes were made.

I tried the .25cal mosquitoes just for the hell of it and it was not a good thing. Voltar_1 is spot on and the .25 really starts to shine when you push the bigger pellets through it at 100 yards +. Now if you run a Talon tank on your .25 it should do fine at close ranges, but when you push the range out the mosquitoes will get crazy on you. My TalonTune Condor .25 will shoot great at 55fpe with the Talon tank with haevy pellets, but the Condor tank brings it to the next level with heavy pellet.

You are correct, this is a bad analogy.

The whole premise is wrong. A .22 has a range of pellet weights available as welll as the .25 has its own range of pellets.
The confusion begins when fellas try to make a case that is fictitious and does not exist.
Compare the lightest in .22 to the lightest in .25 as well as the heaviest in .22 to the heaviest in .25……
You cannot mix the weight classes and get a meaningful comparison.
When I roll out the .25 it sure as heck is not to shoot .25cal mosquitoes that is for dog-gone sure 🙂
So compare a .22 Kodiak to a .25 Kodiak
compare a .22 Eunjin to a .25 Eunjin…..
Better yet compare a .22 roundball to a .25 roundball……

However I know of no-one that would shoot a 21 gr .25 pellet (same weight as .22 kodiac) with 31 and larger weights available. If your goal is to shoot a 21 gr pellet as effeciently as possible, stay with the .22. If you want a better 100yd gun, get the .25 and shoot kodiacs or EJs and the difference will amaze you (even if the .25 has a slightly lower mv).

A fairer example would be the same gun, but with a .22 and a .25 barrel.

25 cal will get more power than a .22 barrel in the same gun.

The example you describe – the .25 gun would be actually be a less powerful rifle than the .22 gun if you were to replace the barrel with a .22.

.25 cal in a Condor will out preform .22 in all respects.

Ballistic Coeficient would be a wee bit higher in the .25. BC has something to do with the square of the sectional density, or some such maffs (and again, maffs is hard) so all things being equal, the larger diameter bullet has the higher BC. Better stated, take a 750grain .50BMG projectile, shrink it down proportionally in size and weight to .25 caliber, and the 50’s BC is higher. I can’t recall if it’s twice as high, or even 4 times as high. But it’s higher.

This question reminds me of a topic that came up a few months ago. The question was this:

If you had two guns shooting at exactly the same power, one in .25, and the other in .22, and both pellets weighing exactly the same, which would do better?

If my memory serves me right, the consensus was the .22 would do better. If all things are exactly the same, exept pellet diameter, the .25 would suffer slightly because of more frontal surface area, meaning it would have slightly more air resistance, or drag thru the air. The .22, having the same weight as the .25, would have less drag, making it slightly more efficiant. It was a interesting thread.
