You all are gonna call bullshit when I say this, but I have a Winchester lever model 9422 in .22mag that prints .5″ @100y all day long with Winchester hollow points. Wont shoot anything else well at all.
When my eyes allowed me to shoot open sights (25 years ago) I knocked off hundreds of gophers with it out to 200yards.
When I finally mounted a scope on it, I killed 2 rockchucks at a measured 1260 feet (you do the math :)). I then proceeded to put the gophers into extinction in Lewis and Clark county(Montana).
At some time I decided to buy a Marlin 25 in .22mag so I could retire the Winchester. It will print just under an inch at 100y using the same ammo.
I then bought a H&R in .22mag just so I could have the first semi-auto on the block. Horrible trigger, but still shoots great.
Ive had 3 .17HMRs, and only kept 1. I kept the barrel for my TC Contender. Ive never done any mathematical equasions to figure out which caliber was theoretically better, but every last thing I shot with the .22mag died with 1 shot, and I shot hundreds from field mice to coyotes. Hearing the impact at range and seeing the critter just fold up gives me confidence in the .22mag, so thats what I prefer.

Sorry, I didnt even comment on your beautiful new rifle. Its a real looker, and Im sure it will perform very well and kill with persuasion.
I am a big fan of laminate stocks ever since I bought one for the 10/22.
Dont let my banter prevent you from enjoying the .17HMR, be cause you will enjoy it immensly. If I hadnt cut my teeth with the .22mag, the .17MHR would be my go-to gun when I grabbed the rimfires.
Yes…you can shoot out to 300 yrds with a .17 HMR. But, i don’t suggest it. Like i said above 250 yrd headshots on Jack rabbits is not difficult. Just gotta know your trajectory. Also shot 1 through the body at that distance and the lil ole .17 went completely through.
Now for the .22 WMR vs .17 HMR….it will be forever ongoing. But, the one thing that pretty much hails true is that the .17 hmr is more accurate. That’s a fact. But up close the .22 WMR HP blows stuff apart. So does the .17 hmr but not as badly.
I have owned both caliber and i much prefer the .17 hmr although the ammo is more expensive. But that is ok cause the .17 hmr is not my primary rimfire gun. For plinking i shoot my custom 10/22

I was going to get a .22 WMR, but if you think that a .17 HMR is that much better, maybe I should go with that.
The 17HMR will have more range and power than the .22 mag. But the 22mag is cheaper to shoot. 😀

Well shadoh, that do have some new 30 grain – 2200 fps polytip ammo in .22 mag. Not too many reports on it yet. But that projectile should make the 22 mag just that much better.

The 22 WMR isnt even in the same league as the 17hmr. They arent even comparable if you ask me.

I too have a marlin 917V with the same stock. A real tackdriver with the Hornady polytip ammo and that gun. Don’t waste your money on other ammo manufacturers. Stick with the Hornady in that gun. 250 yrd headshots on Jacks are common.
Did you think about the .22 WMR when you were picking a rifle?

Nice gun. Those 17hmrs are nice. Don’t reach out too far, too small of a bullet to do that. But out to a few hundred yards you can take small game. Just hope the wind isn’t blowing too hard. 😀
the silencer/shroud puts the icing on the cake for me 😀
hopefully it shoots as good as it looks.
heavy barrel seven shot mag makes awesome long range sniping 🙂

furthest shot was 160, too windy for anything further.
this thing shits all over a .22lr in my opinion.
anything i hit with this either chest or head DID NOT MOVE AN INCH!
with the 2 birds there was nothing left except blood and guts on top of the
fence posts….
as soon as the 17gr hits something it just explods and destroy anything in its way.
i am overwhelmed WELL worth it just to see the poof of feathers or pink mist of a rabbits head.
