Q:

"Power adjuster" woes….

The other day I had occasion to pull the spring preload assembly from my SS at the range. My friend Vincent was there with good advice, except for warning me that the little screw that rides in the slot (the indicator) was frail plastic. So, of course, I broke it off.

For the last month or so I’ve been shooting it at a fixed setting (4) while I got around to ordering parts from AF. I decided to order a new male end in case I couldn’t get the broken stub of the screw out along with several screws.

Today I went to put the new parts in. Unfortunately, the new (plastic) male didn’t fully thread into the (metal) female. Silicone lube did no good, the threads just got too tight. Fortunately I was able to use a jewlerr’s screwdriver to thread the stub out of the original and was able to reuse it.

So, my adivce is should you ever need to order parts for this assembly, consider ordering a complete assembly. The chances of the pieces fitting together and working might be better.

It turns out it is a 4-40 X .125 screw. I used a 4-40 X .250 and filed it down some (it wants to be like .170 or so).

Doug, if it helps, I believe that’ll be a 4-40 thread on the pw indicator.

Thanks, that’s what I thought at first as well, but the major diameter on the the screw seems to be .106 not the .112 normal for 4-40s. Mind you, I”m not above drilling and tapping the male fitting 4-40 at a different spot on the rim if necessary…….

Looks like AF decided to cut some corners in the newer guns, mines a ’05 model, and the little PW screw is actually made of metal.

Are you sure? I thought it was metal, too…..

Now that I’ve got it all working again, I may try to get a metal one to replace the plastic one. There’s a fair bit of threads in the male piece it screws into.

My Condor from shortly after they were released and my even older Talon SS both have Plastic power wheel set screws.

I don’t think your supposed to mix and match the metal and plastic halves of the power wheel – should stick with metal to metal and delrin to delrin. Threads cut for metal require a difference tolerance than delrin threads as delrin has some spring back so a female will be smaller and a male thread larger than the same thread cut into aluminum.

One time I needed to get my hammer out, and forgot the proper sequence in the operation. I took the barrel out BEFORE removing the little PW screw to take out PW assembly, not good, won’t do that again lol.

Thanks for the heads up Doug 😀
