How does this compare?
Hey guys, I’m a fairly new SS owner, and I have been working on making mine as quiet as possible with stuff I can get at the hardware store. I made baffles by cutting 3/8ths inch ID springs various lengths, wrapped them with window screen material, and then separated them with one inch fender washers with 1/4th inch holes. The first baffle by the barrel is just a 1 inch OD spring with a washer on it. I also drilled out the front bushing. It is quieter than it was out of the box, but as I have neighbors, I want it to be as quiet as possible. I took a video of it being shot from two different angles. The first one is with the camera behind me about 6 feet. It seems loud, but I was shooting it inside as well, which may be part of the problem. The second shot was taken from in front and just below the camera, and is right outside the sliding door I am shooting out of. It is also about 6 feet away. Could you guys take a quick look at the video, and see how the gun compares to guns with other shrouds, such as the one from Sharpshooter and Tony? I am trying to decide whether or not it is worth the extra money to get a baffled shroud, or if I am okay with what I have.

I too did a similar test, and posted the results in bikin’s thread above.
I was shooting from my porch out an open door.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Actually, Trig, my design is loosely based on yours, using springs and screen instead of the pvc and scotch pads. I just happened to have those instead, and heard they worked well, too. Sharp, I actually would have rather done the tests outside, but the wind was blowing 30 – 40 mph today, which would have played hell on the microphone. I tend to agree that I am probably hearing the acoustics of the room, and that outside it is probably quieter. Neighbors probably don’t hear it at all, but I tend to get persnickety about such things. I may end up ordering one of your shrouds before it’s all over with! Probably will have to wait until after the holidays, though…

sounds pretty good, but kind of hard to tell as it seems much of your noise is echo off the walls (typical of indoors).
might want to do the same evaluation outdoors.
Also the shooter perceives a lot more noise than a bystander. I’d recommend having someone else shoot the gun (outdoors) with: you 8-10 ft away, you just around the corner of the house or another building, you on the opposite side of the building. See what you think from a different perspective.

I think shooting inside might be amplifying the report of your gun a little. Probably shooting outside would be a better test of what it is going to sound like, though I discovered a simple fix to make your gun quieter than mine with a Tony shroud, and I simply turned my volume to your video off…… 😆 😆
I never tried the spring approach with baffles, but with the construction I did with those baffles I made, it made my gun I think a bit quieter than your video shots……Hell I don’t know, just seems like I remember it being quieter than that.
Since experimenting with my own, I bought one of Tony’s and thats the best move I ever made if you are looking for insane quietness.

Seems really hard to tell from the video- but I am sure the poor acoustics did not help- What was the power wheel setting and was the gun charged to 3000psi? I have an SS in .177 at one point I did the washer thing and I really didnt find it all that helpful so I took all of that stuff out of the gun- from what I have heard add on shrouds get the volume way down…
That seems pretty quite to me.

Please read my account of my new shrpshotr28 machined aluminum baffle setup, I posted it a couple days back on the Talon SS thread page. It costs under $130 and will not add tons of extra weight to your talon SS and in fact make it more balanced. The problem with the hardware store route is that to me it is a jerry rigged deal and will add extra weight on your gun 😥 . My SS .177 now fires not only way quieter but smooter, more accurate….summon sharpshotr28 via email here on the Talon forum, and maybe you can get one on his next run. The design is flawless slides into shroud and looks stock, it is worth the price!
