Q:

Average mark-up

What do you guys think is the average retailer mark-up on airguns? Does the percentage change for domestic vs imported? What has a greater influence currency exchange or demand?

I’ve been looking at on line retail prices and comparing prices in various countries… some european guns are actually cheaper in the US than in their country of origin (not many).

My family business mark-up is generally around 30%. Sure, not everything is the same.

Hard to say, but IMO when it comes to mark-up (the origianl question) neither is very important relative to volume.

If it’s a small business, with say a five thousand dollar ‘nut’, and you sell 100 guns a month, you can ‘live’ on $50 per gun. If, OTOH, you only turn a gun or two a day, you’re going to need more mark-up. Take on a partner, or a vacation, and the margin gets worse.

PA can make money on such small margins because of their volume. And in a funny way, small margin makes their volume large.

Consider the other way around…anything we see in the US for a $ price, here in the UK they just change the $ sign for the £ sign.

Example: Adobe Master Collection CS4:

US price: $400
UK price: £400

The Rip-Off UK, known derisively to foreign companies as ‘Treasure Island’ and ‘The Gold Coast’.

I thought the same thing untill I looked a shipping costs. Might save 25-40 bucks on the purchase, but the shipping is just brutal..lol
