Tri-rail mount surprised me
My latest .22 SS only had the one piece accushot 1″ high rings on the frame rail. Had to snuggle the bottle too closely for a good sight picture, so I ordered a tri-rail from AF on Monday. It got here today in the mail. When I removed the scope and rings to attach the tri-rail, I really anticipated that the scope was going to be off zero a considerable amount due to raising the scope so much higher.
First shot to re-zero @ 30yds, impact was exactly perfect in elevation and windage was only off about 2″ left of where it had been shooting prior to the rail addition. The only adjust I had to make was to bring the windage 2″ right and the gun was zero’d dead on in 4 shots.

Yeah scope height can be a very subjective thing, and a important one. I looked into getting low rings, and then re-installing the rail, for the rigidity factor. What I found is that’s it’s not easy to find really low rings that are for a 30mm scope tube.
I brought this up with Mac 1 Tim, and he surmised that most scopes with these larger tubes also have larger objective lenses, making it difficult, if not impossible to mount such a scope on a typical rifle, (with low rings) as the objective bell would hit the barrel, so there’s really no demand for low rings with 30mm. Of course AF guns have no such issue, as the scopes are mounted so high anyway, even without the tri rail.
But whatever makes one the most comfortable is the way to go obviously, it makes for better shooting, we’re all built differently. Some of us have chubby cheeks, and some of us don’t for instance… 😆
I guess my old chubby cheeks require a bit more height…. 😆 It just put me out of form trying to get a good set with just the rings on the rail. Have not tried Med rings, but this setup made all the difference from the way it had been, but I sure thought it would have made a lot more of a difference in the impact from where the scope had been zero’d prior to raising it that much higher.
The tri-rail and medium rings provide a perfect height for me. I don’t know how it feels without the tri-rail. This is the only way I’ve ever shot it.
That is suprising. As I expected, I shot low after installing, but the windage was centered. Truth be told, I found that shooting with high rings and the rail kept me from getting a nice cheek weld with it, my consistancy in accuracy has actually improved without it. So now with just high rings, it seems about perfect.

I had the same thing happen on mine..I’m sure some ones knows why but I dont..I zeroed mine mounted to the rail, then I made my 3/4″ riser and re zeroed it..I was assuming it would be 3/4 off but no..it was dead on..maybe a few clicks to the left.. 😕 I have often wondered how high it would have to be to get off zero..2,6,12 inches?? I just dont understand it myself..
