grub screw help!
i was trying to remove the barrel so that i can change out the hammer when i found out that the bottom grub screws are a bit smaller than the one’s on the sides. I tried the 3/32 and and 5/64 but both wont fit. the 5/64 is way to small and the 3/32 just wont go in. Can anyone tell me what size allen wrenhces i need to remove the darn thing? thanks

The tapped holes are 10-32, a normal (‘plug’) tap is probably best to chase the threads. Be careful, it’s only aluminum and not all that thick.
You have no need of dies of any size. A tap wrench, OTOH, is recommended unless you’re real handy with taps.
Don’t forget to get replacement screws.

i finally got the screws off and was able to install a heavier hammer from Talon Tunes. I am extremely happy as i am now getting an additional 300fps. 😀 but now i have another problem…. i stripped two screws first is the bottom grub screw and the other is the screw that holds the handguard in place. I think i may need to do a tap and die, can you tell me what size taps/dies i will need so that i can just go out and gets some. thanks bro’s
My 3/32 wrench measures .095 or 2.43 mm. Next standard metric is much smaller (2.0 mm).
But more importantly, metric screws are illogical on a gun made in Texas that uses all SAE hardware. Where do you think those two screws came from? How did they manage to stay together in the factory and not end up in two different guns? How come the wrench the factory worker used worked?
Anyway, I think you were on the right track with stoning down the wrench, but you just didn’t do it enough. It’s easy to hand fit an allen wrench, I’ve had to do it to match many times on small screws found in instruments (the Brits have their own special sizes…..who’d have guessed?). Just lay a flat of the wrench on a firm surface (like the top of the vice) and draw file the upper flat just a bit. You want to remove the finish from the last 1/8 inch or so of that flat only. Do it six times and you have a very gentle taper of a few thousandths to work with. Keep it flat and long so the taper is slight. Be sure the wrench stays plumb and seats deep in the screw. Then turn it out normally.

i got the gun new from PA. I think that i may have a rare case of a metric sized grub screws. I took the 3/32 allen wrench and tried to have it resized a little with a sharpening stone, i cleanded out the screws using an awl, and i am still unsuccesful at removind the last 2 screws. in terms of metric size what would be the next smallest size or comparable to a 3/32? thanks
Did you get your gun new or second hand? if the latter, someone may have put a drop of nail polish/thread lock in the bottom screws (don’t know why but I’ve seen it done) which would prevent the wrench fitting correctly. I’d expect the EJs to be closer to 950, but have never used them myself so maybe someone else will chime in on that part.
i did not have any problems with the barrel cap or the 2 on the sides, when i tried to put the allen wrench in on the las t 2 bottom screws it wont even go in at all, its seems as though the last 2 screws are a hair bit smaller. One of the allen wrenches i have is slightly rounded and even that wont make it in.
Also, is it normal for me shooting 28.5 eun jins to be getting a speed of 820 f.p.s average? it seems pretty slow, hence the need to change out to a heavier hammer. thanks bros
if you have a U.K. gun there would be the possibility of the screws being metric, but I don’t think so. the 3/32 is correct, you just may have a little dirt or a burr in the bottom set screws. you might try “deburring” the tip of your allen wrench with some very fine sandpaper to aid in it starting into the screw, or cleaning the socket in the grub screws themselves.

You stripped the threads on the rifle or the actual grub screws? Its a lot easier to strip the rifle threads considering its an aluminum frame and a steel grub screw – alu tends to lose in those situations.
If the threads on the gun have just been cross threaded or something then you can just follow the threads with the correct size tap as recommended by Dk, if however the are pretty much destroyed then you will likely need to drill and tap to the next largest size thread – I would however strongly suggest you hand the gun over to a freind or aquaintance who has some aptitude with this type of thing. Tapping holes isnt something I’d recommend to someone who stripped threads on a brand new rifle.
