Q:

Service life of the hammer spring?

I haven’t seen this addressed here, and a search comes up empty.

Does the hammer spring weaken over time or otherwise lose its ability to drive the hammer against the tophat with the correct amount of force?

I’m sure it does, but I’m wondering if anyone has replaced it just to guarantee that the hammer travel is within spec. Is there a particular timeframe where the spring should be replaced simply as a matter of routine maintenance, or do you wait until it fails?

And if you were going to swap it out, would you go for the OEM replacement or an aftermarket heavier model, assuming you had the stock OEM hammer?

Sorry for all the question marks, but for some reason I started thinking about it, and now I can’t get the damn thing out of my head… 😉

Thanks Doug, that puts that issue to rest. Now I can think about something else to dwell about. 😉 😆

Like how long before you shoot the barrel out. I have some center fires in 6.5 gone in 800 rds. custom ss ones. Glenn

Not a real issue, no throat to give out on you (that’s where CF barrels ‘shoot out’, the bore is still OK typically). Given the much more modest strains I don’t think you can afford to buy enough pellets to shoot out an AF barrel…..even if Obama gives you some of that lovely free money he’s throwing around.

I’d be *EXTREMELY* suprised if it did anything that can be measured. At the very worst, the effect can be compensated for by a very small change on the prelaod screw.

Not a safe thing to do, probably, but not to worry your spring should be fine.

What if the rifle (Talon SS) is left cocked for a while? Does this weaken the spring?

Today I forgot mine cocked for about 8 hours and I was wondering if that did any damage.

Thanks

Glad to bring you (even) a moment’s joy!

Feel free to pass it on……

Thanks for the post, the smile on my face is genuine for sure.

For practical purposes such a spring has an infinite service life (given it’s properly made).

Properly designed and made springs do their work by totally elastic dislocations (a conditon where whole rows of atoms slip over their neighbors and back again). No atomic level changes happen, no new stacking defects (the prime failure mode) are created with each cycle.

As springs get more and more highly stressed, this becomes less true. But consider that an exhaust valve spring in a 70,000 mile old car has a huge number of cycles on it and it’s much more higly stressed than hammer springs (not as much as springers of course, but getting there). This incluces the likelyhood that it was left fully compressed for a very long time while the engine was shut down (something we’re hopefully not doing with our rifles).

I wouldn’t worry about it, I seriously doubt you can afford enough pellets to effect the spring. Once it takes a set, it’s the same for a long long time. When it does ‘get weak’ (you’ve had inelastic dislocations and added stacking faults) all that really happens is it got a little weak. It’s still a spring, it just has a slightly different spring constant.

If I had to replace one (say if it broke, got damaged or lost), I’d go for a stock one unless there was something I was trying to do.
