How to handle a Harris Bipod install?
I’ve got a hunk of B-Square dovetail mount that I’m prepared to cut down, drill and tap for a sling stud so I can mount a Harris bipod (or clone).
But it’s going to require the purchase of a tap set. Harbor Freight, I figure…
The effort is half the satisfaction, but I’ve never tapped anything before (except the occasional B-Girl :wink:)
Anything to look out for or keep an eye on while tapping for a screw mount?
Alternatively, I figure I can just drill and then epoxy/JB Weld the sling stud in there. Less elegant, but I think it’d get the job done, and I’d save a few bux by not having to buy a tap set.
What do ya think? Which way to go?

Here is what I did.
Dovetail to Weaver adapter from PyramydAir – $10 (way cheaper than other brand name mounts)
Uncle Mikes sling Studs ordered from MidwayUSA
Then I just bought a little Drill/tap kit from Sears – 10/32NC tap with #21 Drill.
Drill-Tap-mount and you are done.
I have some extra Sling Studs left so if you want to mail me your Dovetail to Weaver adapter I can drill/tap and install sling stud for you.

Well, I went for the quick and somewhat easy, considering it’s Sunday, and I didn’t feel like driving ten miles to HF.
As I mentioned, I started with a B-Square mount, it used to be a high-post adjustable, turns out it was just a complete loser, so it was tossed in the tool box.
But here’s to recycling…. after some work with a hack saw, a bench grinder, a drill press and about seven Heinekens, here’s what I came up with….
Rather than tap a thread, I started with an Uncle Mike’s stud from Walmart… I ground it down to proper depth and then drilled the mount deep enough to allow the stud to fit snugly. Then I used something called “FastSteel” to glue the stud inside the mount… it’s one of those play-doh style epoxy mixtures that comes in a little tube. It says it’s made for steel to steel applications… early results say it’s pretty tenacious, it just might do the trick.
A couple coats of flat black and clear coat, and I got a homemade bipod mount for the “Rock Mount” Harris clone I also bought at Walmart.
Walmart is getting way too much of my money these days…. 😆
We’ll see how that glued-in stud holds up in the long run… but if it fails, I’ve got Plan B ready to re-jigger the mount and make it work for sure. 😉

Here is something similar that I had WOK do for me.. I mailed it to him and he taped it and set the stud in.. works great for me and that is a BKL mount being used…
Exacty as I did just go slow a little oil and keep backing out the tap once in awhile to give the tap a break as if you go too fast you could snap it. I also used Loctite on the stud as well.
