Is 17HMR or .223 viable options for 100yd. accuracy?
I know people have done .223 conversions as well as other firearm barrel conversions but is .17 an option as well?
Does .17HMR or .223, if a Condor is properly set up, offer significant improvement in accuracy at long range compared to .22 and .25 air rifle barrels/pellets?

Hi Tony & others, alright, what i’ll do: next saturday i go out ot the coyote point rifle club, with the .223 barrel installed. Believe it or not, since my arrivel in the USA i haven’t shot the rifle with this set up at all; the barrel was machined about a week before i took the plane here, only did some testing in NL out to 30 yards and the results were very promising.
The barrel is a heavy bull barrel, outside diameter of barrel is inside diameter of frame. .219/.223 bore, 1:14 twist.
Projectiles i brought form the netherlands are 41.5 grain swaged rimmie bullets.
Chronied them in the netherlands at 280 metres per second on a new type condor valve, no powermods. I’ll put some effort in it to set the gun up for this barrel, since i’m curious too, just been way to busy with all kinds of stuff 🙂
May be with prometheus sabots drill for mount a 17 hmr bullet in side ? some body think is possible ? 🙄
I see what you’re trying to do, the faster twist rate of the HMR barrel (1 turn in 9″) would help stabilize a longer, heavier pellet (or bullet) at airgun velocities. I hope you find what you’re looking for.
As for the .223, all .22 caliber center fire barrels are actually .224″ in diameter. Twist rates for the .223 remington vary. The standard twist is 1 turn in 12″ (which isn’t going to do you much good). The AR15/M16 in 5.56 NATO (essentially .223 Remington but not exactly) uses a 1 in 7″, 1 in 8″, or 1 in 9″ twist barrel depending on where you get it. This is what you’re looking for. And, there are companies making .22 caliber lead bullets (either cast or swaged) in weights from 40 to 60 grains. The airgun experimenter will find room to play here… I wish you lots of success. i,m shooting now with 22 eley magnum pellets 30 gr. but i need more 😆 😆 i like the v-max 17 HMR.best regards
sorry for my english 😳 Is possible shot a 17 HMR with plastic sabot in 24 ” 22 caliber AF condor ? 😆 if is possible, were i cant buy the bullets and the sabots ? 😉 Thank you
To my knowledge, nobody casts or swages LEAD .17 caliber bullets. The lead wouldn’t stand up to .17 caliber centerfire velocities. They don’t even use exposed lead in the .17HM2 (2100fps). The bores would lead so badly (and so quickly) any kind of accuracy would be un-obtainable.

You’re talking about using a barrel from a .17HMR or a .223 modified to fit in a condor, and to fire pellets through them. Is that correct?

I’m in the East Bay, appreciate the feedbck, I know one member here, Vincent that has a Condor in .223, I’ll have to talk with him more about his next time at the range to see what its shooting…

Good Question Tony. The first problem would be finding a .17 or .223 bullet in soft cast lead. They might be available but I have never seen one. I have a custom 17hmr varmint gun that is very accurate out to 100 yards but that round also shoots at 2500fps, a figure that you will never be able to reach with an airgun. The second problem with the .17 is wind, or any light breeze for that matter, the slightest amount of breeze will move that .17 bullet like michael jackson on crack. Thirdly, fully jacketed bullets dont work in airguns, there simply isnt enough power back there to get the thing moving.
