Measured the actual amount of choke in my SS
I measured the choke in my talon .22 barrel.. .0035 smaller in the choked end. I had read on here in another post (that I cant find now) there were about a half thousand of choke..which may be true for some barrels but not in my barrel..its impossible to measure with dial calipers due to the rifling, I tried it at first just for the heck of it..I did find that non of the riflings are the same depth though..one was about 11-12 thou. deeper than any of the others..

Well the slugging is better than the guages and did not show a groove .012″ deeper than the other. The 0.219″ measure perhaps is across a groove and a land?
I checked another HW barrel that is in my ‘Vulture’ and the muzzle measured 0.216/0.221 and the breech measures 0.217/0.222″ for a .001″ choke.
there is zero reason for any variance in dimensions of a barrel and so if there is the barrel is most likely …… crapola…..

I slugged my barrel today.. not sure if I did it right or not, I at first tried to squash one to .230 and i dont think you can do a cp like that, I put them in my Dake arbor press and all that happened was the skirt got flattened, i then put a pellet in the muzzle placed it vertically on a milling machine vise and took a welding rod and tamped the pellet into a flattend slug kind like you would seat a ball in your muzzle loader. I did it to both ends, the pellets came out all nice,round looking and with all the rifling marks..I’m still not positive I did it right but here are the measurements.. .216 and .221.. they were not actually round as you can get a different size each time you turn the slug but this is what they averaged. on a side note, the muzzle end did have one place it measured .219.
After a few beers and a good soak in the hot tub, i’m not convienced this is how to do it, after all the high points are what you are miking, not the lands, and the high points to me would be the depth of the riflings. I would think you would need to mike the lands..maybe I’m wrong..this is all new to me..the slugging part..not the measuring… 😉

Sorry, I cant see .012 I dont remember how many riflings were in the barrel but i worked the calipers until it bottomed out in all of them..and one of them was .012 deeper.. 😕
