Q:

Losing it! Condor with 18in shrouded barrel or ss with mods?

Muchachos-
Got a question I’m hoping some of you experienced types can help me answer! I’ve been buzzing around the forums, going this way and that until suddenly, I went completely crosseyed! I’m looking for a .22 beast of a machine that will be quiet but not overly expensive. Thought about getting a Talon ss on the cheap and then just getting a 20in shrouded barrel (about $200 extra for that!) and maybe have a little work done to get the power up… OR- just getting a Condor on the cheap and getting an 18in shrouded barrel (again about $200 extra) and have a little more power cuz it’s a condor. Problem is, I’m not quite sure which route will net me the best results as far as saving money and getting a keeper for my first pcp. I plan on using this thing for plucking squir.. err, uhh – pest control from a distance and I need it to be “some what” backpackable. I need it somewhat backpackable because sometimes I bike out into the woods and also because when the neighborhood kiddies see me rollin out with my gat, I have to explain I’m not going to kill bambi and it’s only a “BB gun” and not a REAL rifle and no, you can’t shoot it..etc, etc -total pain in the ass but hey, they’re kids right? So fellas, if you got anything on this I would appreciate the help before I have to result to Hare Kare. I swear- it’s like a cat trying to bury shyte on a marble floor over here 😯 ! So, when you have the time fellas-Thanks!!!!!

im pretty sure you picked one already so just saying hello 😛

I have the same deal (except no washers in the FE). The Frame Extender sticks out 3″ past the end of the frame and gives better than Talon SS quieting. The 18″ barrel shoots JSB Exacts at about 900 fps, which is (IMHO), a quantum leap over the TSS. For the same pellet in both guns, CP’s at 14.3g, that is 840 vs 950 fps. Yes, it will reach out to squirrels at that range and impact power will not be an issue. Only issue is sight in distance vs range of distances you will be shooting and knowing the compensation you will use at each distance as all guns have some drop over that distance.

Yep, i guess that would be a nice setup as well. I guess It all depends on how much power you need, and how much youre willing to spend.
In all honesty, i would not pay $100 bucks or more to shroud an 18″ barrel, because IMHO, the power diference from a 12″ to an 18″ is not enough to justify the expense. on the other hand i would pay to silence my 24″ barrel cause the diference in power is almost TWICE of that of a 12″ one. (lucky me i dont have to pay anyway, my friend gave me a supressor with the gun 🙂 )
But then again, thats just MY personal opinion, im shure others would be more than happy to get a shroud for an 18″ barrel.

the important ting is, and i cant emphazise this enough, is to get a TALON valve, NOT a condor one. This is my second AF gun, and the only one i like. the condor i had before (with hi flo valve) was a goddamn nightmare because of the old valve, and this one does work better with the new valve, but its still very far from being the wonderfull gun it is when i put the talon tank on it.

quote Benzin:

Regardless of what size barrel you get (12 for compact silent, 24 for power, etc), i recommend getting something that has a talon tank, NOT a condor (hiflo) one.
I have both, and i NEVER use my condor tank anymore. my 24″ barrel with the talon tank allows me to throw kodiaks at about 950fps, with a lot of consistency, without valve lock trouble, and for a high (+40) shot count.
why would i want to shoot kodiaks at 1150fps, and get groups four times larger that those i get at 950fps????? (this is not a theory, ibe actually tested the accuracy on both)

what would i do if i were in your shoes?
Get a talon ss, and an aditional 24″ barrel.

Need a silent compact gun? put the 12″ in.
Need a more powerfull (40FPE) rifle? just slap de 24″ on it and youre good to go.

My 2 cents.

Sounds reasonable. Now what if I got an 18 or maybe a 20in shrouded barrel to keep it compact yet give it a little more power? Would it be worth it?

O.K.- thanks fellas! This is all helping. I guess deep down if I have to stretch out to 60, maybe 65 yards I’m afraid the Talon ss won’t cut it unless I put a gazillion dollars in mods into it. I wouldn’t mind putting some money into it later on down the line, but right now I just want to get the quietest gun I can get with the most power at a decent price- or at least enough power to keep me happy for a while, know what I mean? I’ve been watching some of the sales go by on Talon ss’s, but I haven’t jumped on any of them yet because of this dilema.

Thanks again!

Since you want packable, I would get the Talon SS and then get a longer barrel if want more power. You’ll end up with a packable airgun and another longer range, harder hitting airgun. You’ll have a choice depending on how you’re feeling that day. Plus you can have different calibers. Get a TSS in .20 or .22 caliber and then an 18″ or 20″ barrel in .22 or .25 caliber. If you don’t mind the length and want the max power with the standard valve, get the 24″ barrel. If you’re only going to have one air tank, I’d get the standard valve/bottle that comes with the TSS. You’ll get a lot more shots and it’s more versatile. It will give you all the power you’ll need and it can be used with a 12″ barrel all the way up to the 24″. You can always get the standard valve modded or play with a heavier hammer if you still want more power.

deciding how much power you actually NEED will guide you in a good decision. Even the TSS (short and portable) is plenty of gun for tree rats out to 50yd or so. Bigger game/longer distances may dictate a longer barrel or more power.

Once you evaluate your needs, you may find that the TSS with shroud is all that is required for your intended shooting purpose.

The accuracy is comparable in all variations and all barrel lengths.

Dude you got the funniest Avatar I’ve ever seen
Very funny

Haha. He said gat.

I tried to think back, but yeah, first time I’ve heard the aiforce guns refered to as a gat. First ever.

Hey- thanks for the info so far fellas !
Skybones, sorry for the flash brother, that’s just the wacky northeast flava bubblin up. Just like to keep things lively if you know what I mean? Yeah, so a used talon and I figured a new shrouded barrel to get the most out of either gun and still keep it compact, powerful and quiet.
Hey by the way, how do I make my avatar small like everyone elses? When I chose it I just cut and pasted the link to the pic…

Chupacabra- How is the talon for 60 yard shots? Is there much hold over?

My eyes are still jumping after reading your post! A little much on the flash and dash! You can make any configuration you want wiith the Condor,( I’m not sure about the $200.00 figure you seemed to be calulating?) Long barrel/ high flow tank== big fps, and noise. Short barrel (inside frame with low cost additives) lower fps/lower noise. The “on the cheap”? I gotta go take an aspirin.
