Q:

New barrel, buttt……

I just installed a new barrel but it seems the barrel is larger than the original one and the whole for the screw in the bushing is not as deep so the bushing set screw is sticking out a few millimeters. Does this matter?

Something I just noticed when i took it out to make sure it was still shooting… Now when i pull the bolt back on the tophat of the tank it doesn’t slide on smoothly like it used to. Did I reinstall something wrong?

Your local Ace Hardware store?
They should be standard, non-metric sizes. It’s a 10-32. Takes a 3/32″ Allen wrench. You’re mainly interested in the correct length. On the sides, the back end should be flush with the outer housing of the main body tube. The bottom ones really don’t matter so long as they don’t go past the threads. Longer is better on the bottom ones if you can’t find a perfect fit.
Take one with you for comparison purposes.

Sliding the breech up and down seems to have loosened up now for some reason, now it isn’t a problem.

Now I just need some set screws that will fit the shallower collar on the bushings. Any help?

Last night I realized LeeMak had sent me 4 new setscrews with my new barrel. Turns out I didn’t need them, but for some reason AF packs them with a new barrel. I just didn’t see ’em I guess.

goodluck on fixing it 🙂

This makes the holes in the collars shorter. Airforce supplies different size screws with the different barrels:

The barrel screws for the 12″ barrel are: 2 ea of 7/16 x 10/32 cup point set screws and 2 ea of 3/8 x 10/32 cup point set screws. 18″ and 24″ barrel are: 2 ea of 5/16 x 10/32 cup point set screws and 2 ea of 3/8 x 10/32 cup point set screws.

All that notwithstanding, using 12″ barrel screws with a longer barrel should have no effect on alignment. Since your problem happened with the barrel change, you have a pretty good insight to the problem. You could even try going back to the old barrel to see if the problem goes away.

I have a similar problem that seems not to change with different barrels.

I’ll check to see if its bent but I don’t think it would be. I would notice this in accuracy wouldn’t I?

I compared the new barrel to the stock 12 incher and the holes for the set screws are definitely not as deep so its not that I mixed up the screws I was very careful not to. I suppose it’s possible I did but I will have to take a look at that tomorrow.

You didn’t mix up your set screws did you?
There should be 4 to hold the barrel in the frame. Two are a tad bit longer than the other two. They are about 7/16 or 1/2 inch long. The shorter two go in on the side, and the longer ones are on the bottom.

There should be two others to hold the two different barrel bushings on the barrel. While I haven’t measured these, I’d expect them to be no longer than 1/4″.

None of the set screws should stick out. A few millimeters is about 1/8″. That’s a lot.

Take your new barrel and roll it across a table. Observe the reduced section the breech slides on, it may be bent.
I had to chuck up and straighten RandyHub’s .22 barrel as it was really bent.
That could cause the catchy breech action you are getting.
