Stock Coloring Materials…
So I finally did a laminate thumbhole stock for my TalonSS with the hope of using it for the local FT match (I am not expecting to win but to just have some fun).
I did a test with a red Sharpie and like the results but don’t want to color the whole thing with a pen… Tried a light blue Hilighter with decent results but it raised the grain.
What types of dye do you stock builders use to color your laminate?
Aniline dye, RID dye???

The only multi color stocks I have seen were made from multi colored laminations. Stuff like this

What kind of effect are looking to create?
Glad you like my bathroom river rock floor, it looks really cool. I gotta make my own baseboards, got the material, just have a really long honey-do list.
Here was my first attempt with mdf… I like the new one better, its a little different shape but the way the action sits in the new one is a million times better than my first attempt. I also fit the bolt in the handle prior to laminating the parts together so it all lines up. In the original topic you can see where the action sits and how it was a bit adhoc. Then I made a jig so I can easily make more center pieces with a bearing router bit…
I was going to give the first stock away but I split it as I was taking it off the rifle. I got a bit too gorilla with a screwdriver on the bolt in the handle, missed the slot and proceeded to twist with all my strength…… It was probably for the better since the center slot was a full 0.5″ and the rifle is only 0.42″ and I had to shim out the difference…

I tried to float as much as possible and let the action in so the stock doesn’t influence the frame… Only bummer is the multiply ply from HD isn’t the best and it has some holidays that I will have to fill….
Shooter-I noticed the lack of baseboard on your exploded shroud photo and knew instantly that you were a builder! I like the transition to the dark gray rocks in concrete just to the left… I built cabinets and custom furniture for a long time, now I manage large hospitality and resort design projects… Still like to make stuff, don’t think that will ever go away!!
Thanks for the suggestions, I do think alcohol is the way to go, just need to find someone locally who has the dye…
Anyone know how they do the multiple colors? Brush, taping, freehand?

I don’t make stocks but I do own a woodworking company. We use Mohawk brand finishing products. http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/
They are the standard of the industry. Their dye stains are amazing. They have a pretty cool red color. Hope this helps.
I think dyes that are water based will tend to raise the grain more readily than oil based stains/dyes…..The problem with that is finding oil base colors that fit your taste…..

I have 4 pcs. of honduran mahogony 3″x10″x48″. Gonna do something like that, then I’m gonna make a stock for my nikon to use with a telephoto lens, my pop tells me thats what they used instead of a tri-pod back in the old days.
Pictures will follow someday, its a tall order, been busy at work which is a good thing nowadays !!!!
