Q:

pellet seating depth

Has anybody ever experimented with various pellet seating depths to see if it has an effect on accuracy? Coming from a reloading background I would often play with bullet seating depth to get the most accurate load. I began to wonder if it would work on pellets. I am hoping to find a way to get better longer range groups from my .22 Polymags. They shoot great litle 1/4 inch groups at 20 yards and then open up to an inch or more at 40 yards. I love the way the Polymags perform on game, but my cheap Crosman pointed field pellets will shoot groups half their size at 40 yards.

Everything I’ve read so far as C.M.’s are concerned is they are good for close up work and no good for long range. I’d imagine that close up (ten yards or less) and at 900+Fps they’d be devastating.

I was shootin crow mags at 65 yards and groups were 5″ not too good, I swear i could see, them through the scope corkscrewing toward the target.
Shooting .25 cal, tried to get some kodiaks but they are out of stock.
Closer range provided tighter groups.

No I have not tried the Crow Mags yet. I keep reading that they don’t group well past 25-30 yards so I have not yet tried them. I just ordered some JSB Exacts 15.8 gr. If they shoot as well as the Crosman field pellet I will try them on some critters. The Crosman pellets will consistantly shoot smaller than 1/2 inch groups at 40 yards but they have not done well on game.

There’s the rub. Technology vs. the basic “Rubber Meets the Road”.

Preds work, Kodiaks work, CrowMags work, Cardboard box CPs work….

BUT…. I’ve found that the Cheapo CP hollowpoints from WalMart deliver the same type of heat time after time. If I was a smarter man, I’d just settle on them and save myself a few bucks. 😉

Just one man’s opinion. I’ll still buy the tough stuff, but I’m kinda realizing that I need to drill down to one pellet type and then call it a day.

I don’t have any luck with crow mags

Just out of curiosity, have you tried crow magnums? If you have tried them, what kind of groups do you get at 40 yards with those?
