Q:

….and another Jack Haley .32

In truth, I’d had my Haley gun quite a bit longer than Tofaz, but I have to admit that reading his post on him tearing down his gun and reworking it really got me itching to do the same to mine.

My Haley .32 is a bit weaker from the start. I specifically asked for a gun in the 40fpe range to use for small game and Jack supplied me with a QB action that was getting around 650fps with the 45gr round balls. It was grouping fine… minute of squirrel head at 50 yards… and I was happy with it.

Until I read Tofaz’s post… 😯

I decided a couple weekends ago to tear her down for a clean, polish, and port.

I got all the tools I thought I’d need and went to work….

The gun itself
Some Permalyn finish since I’ll have the stock off anyway and a lint free cloth to apply it
A gunsmith tool kit and a couple sets of needle files
A Gerber multi tool (with bottle opener)
Some various left over O-Rings
Tombstone…for some background noise. Great movie.
Channel locks
JB Bore paste
A dremel
A bag of various junk… screws, springs, sears, any and everything. ‘The bag ‘o shit’ always accompanies me when I start a project
And finally, some liquid inspiration

With all that hardware, I went to work. I took the stock off and hit it with a maroon scotchbrite pad to rough it up and then applied a coat of Permalyn. I set it aside to dry while I went to tear down the QB.

I had a bitch of a time getting it back together and really didnt do a lot with it until this weekend when I tore into it again for a bit of porting on the valve.

I shot a couple chrony strings with it and ended up with some very nice numbers…

Starting fill 160bar, ending fill 110 bar.

Some informal groups at a steel plate at 50 yards showed the groups had tightened considerably from what they were.

Yep, Rob, Twist rates in the DAQ and JH are different.

Thanks all…

Tofaz… yep.. when I got inside, she was DIRTY… (hmmm… deja vu? 😯 )

I really was surprised to find the RB’s to be more accurate at the higher velocity. I’d been doing a bit of experimenting with the DAQ and found optimal velocity to be in the 750-850fps range. Same went for the 70 something grain slugs. Now… the 120gr slugs seem to group best in the 850-900fps range.

Far as that finish…. There was one small peice to the puzzle that I’d totally forgotten about. Get some 600 grit sandpaper and buff the piss out of that stock. I mean really hammer it down and buff it out. It will end up quite dull….. now take a clean cloth and a small bit of Johnsons Paste Wax and begin buffing. After that, you can use steel wool to take the finish down to whatever you want. Can use the same trick for Walnut stocks as well….

Trigger…. I didnt do a lot with the trigger. To be honest, I always hate messing around with triggers as I am prone to not remembering how they went back, but I do have two QB triggers so I need to do some work on them… I can do one of them and use the other for a guide

Thanks for the inspiration to tear that one apart. Was a great project..

Hey rob, did you tune your trigger at all?

ROB,

That is SUPERSPECTACULAR man. I am so glad you got a chance to open her up and clean her out. And by your findings, just by polishing and porting, the guns performance has improved dramatically. Power and accuracy. Can’t beat that combo.

Man that finish on your stock looks so sweet. I am gonna go tone mine down a little now looking at yours. That is the kind of luster i am looking for on mine. Mine is too shiney.

Those numbers are very consistent too and you have a nice a subtle bell curve on your shot string. That setting is perfect and you gained over 10 FPE.

1 more thing that i wanted to mention to most folks on the ROUNDBALL issue is that over the years, my findings have been that the SMALL bore RB’s are no good and the BIG bore roundballs are great cause of the rifling twist rate. The twist rate being faster in small bore and slower in big bores. And the faster you push them in big bores the more accurate they become. Such as your findings.

AWESOME WORK ROB :8

Great gun Rob ❗

I want one ❗

Great looking gun and nice fpe!

Thanks all…. only two to start with..haha…..

The stock came from Richards Micro-fit. I’ve got one in Camo Laminate and one in Black Pepper Laminate. Nice stocks that are reasonably priced…if you dont mind waiting forever to get one.

The breech is stock, bolt is custom, of course… I am not that familiar with the QB platform so I’m not quite sure what all has been done to it. Looks a bit different than the QB79 Valve I tore apart couple weekends back.

Basically, I just angled, ported, and DEBURRED everything. Smoothing and polishing really helped open things up. It was so gritty on the inside that I was surprised it was doing any kind of reasonable velocity.

very impressive!

are you running a stock breach, and what has been done to it, also what have you done to the valve, or is it a custom built jobby?
and one more, were did you get that stock?

Only two coronas 😆
Nice!

From the 40’s fpe to 54fpe with tighter groups…..that’s what I call love!!!!! Nice job Rob 😀
