Heat shrink coating to rubberize your shroud

If any of you have ever thought about using heat shrink
material for a shroud coating, here is what it looks like..
It is 1-1/2″ heat shrink material that I found on ebay. It
was $10.00 for 4′. I left a 3/16 to 1/4″ overhang before
I heated it and it wrapped itself around the end just as
you see it…I didn’t have to do anything to it but heat it
with a heat gun….I started at the rifle end and worked
my way to the end of the shroud….It is not the right
color but it is durable and replaceable so there ya go….

Hey Mam. Yep!, It works pretty good. That’s the cheapest I’ve heard of it selling for! Great price! What size shroud you putting it on?

I used it on a few I did my self. The one YeloZ did up for me is holding up Great though.

I would like to get some very thin foam rubber for one. Kinda like you see on some HK P5’s with suppressors. With about the firmness you see on some gardening tools. Should work great!

That or the same material that comes on our AF Air Tanks.

Yes, they can take moderate knocks without losing alignment. My Condor/AH shroud gets around a lot and the shroud has a fair share of scratches. It is not handled with kid’s gloves and still performing without issue.l

24″ universal bicycle inner tube works pretty good too. Doesn’t look to bad either and helps absorb dings.

I have just got an airhog shroud, how robust are they? can they take dings and light knocks without losing alignment?

I just ordered 4′ of it too.

It gets pretty soft when you heat it but when it shrinks it gets really tight..I think it would come out smooth right over the grooves…..I don’t think it would but, I haven’t tried it on anything like that….If there was a rise in the surface I think in would contour itself to that though…

That may be a great coating….The best thing about heat shrink is that you can just cut it off and replace it…No sanding, no prep…

Yep the torch would definately cause some anxiety…Just as a cigarette lighter…Both sound good in my head but maybe not so good in reality…

I Can’t say that I can tell any difference in the sound but I think you’re right, if there were any ringing or vibrations in the shroud you would have to think that the heat shrink would reduce it a significant amount. One thing is for sure…It won’t make it louder…Now you’ve got me thinking about putting a second layer…..

GREAT idea though! I have smaller heatshrink on my TX200 handle.

I was worried about that and I thought it was going to be somewhat of a pain to do also Rhoderman but, it shrunk up nice and tight with no problems or wrinkles…The 1.5″ is a pretty snug fit to start so there is not much excess material to wrinkle up…Took maybe 3 min…I think as long as you start on one end and slowly work your way down and around you’ll be ok….

You could also suspend the tube with wire inside your oven and get a real even shrink on it. A heat gun works, but takes a lot of patience on something that large.
