Laminate Talon SS Stock
Well here is my second Talon stock, which happens to be my first laminated plywood stock…
I tried something new for the local FT competition, the idea was to isolate the tank and barrel to avoid any unnecessary forces that may tweak the frame and throw off the accuracy of the rifle.
In addition to a longer pull I wanted a cheek pad and a spot for the bipod to attach. The plywood is from Home Depot, I sandwiched a sheet of 12mm multi-ply in between two 0.75″ multi-ply sheets.
The Home Depot multi-ply plywood is a bit cheap in the laminate department so this stock was more of an experiment than anything else.
As you can see I made a template for the trigger and the action, this used with a top bearing router bit will give me the correct shape every time, so if I want to make more additional stocks from multi-ply I can use the template again and again.
For the finish I tried something out of the box, Sharpie pens, coated the whole thing in red, sanded it with 220 grit and did the whole thing again with orange. Oddly enough it turned out to be Marlboro/Ferrari F1 red… Then for the clear coat I used water based glossy acrylic clear.
The finish looks great in person, my digital camera had some issues with the color and really freaked out before the clear coat was applied…
All in all I think it turned out pretty nice, I am still on the fence regarding the shape but the ball at the end fits nicely into the spot between my arm and ribs when shouldered and keeps the rifle upright and locked in place.
Haven’t done any target practice yet, just got back from Canada on business and it’s been raining…

That is a very sweet stock, one of a handfull of one piecers i’ve seen. The red is kinda cool. Looks like it shoots real fast. Maybe inlay a ferrari emblem in it. 😀 Nice job.

I may be making another here soon, black of course and probably out of mdf or trupan, mainly because it is easier to shape and sand…
I’m hoping that isolating the tank from my cheek will help with the accuracy for distance shooting, at least now when I miss I know it will be me!
I have enough ply for two more stock blanks, if there is any interest I can route out the middle for the barrel and action and folks can do the rest themselves…
Trading for a rifle is tempting but where I live I have to go through a FFL for any firearm purchases… If I decide to let this one go I will have to find an entertaining way to sell it or give it away.
Anyone have access to a stock duplicating machine!!! 😀 Or plans for making one???

Very nice work and I bet it eliminates the POI shifts that reportedly occur from gripping the handle too tight! 😀

Very surprised how the Home Dumpo ply looks, sweet.
There is definetly better laminate plywood out there, if you do another I would look for a plywood distributer, they carry much tighter, less voids in their ply.

That there is downright purty! I’ve been trying to decide what to do for a stock. Might have to copy parts of your idea! I have a bunch of 2+ inch thick walnut gunstock wood from the old Herter’s stock factory in the Waterloo, Iowa, area. My aunt got a car load of it about 40 or 50 years ago and I ended up with most of it. Been thinking about using some of that for a buttstock. Might have to reconsider and do the whole stock after seeing that sweet piece!

That is a work of art..It should be displayed in a glass case where a bunch of champange sipping rich folks can walk by it and admire it!!! I envy someone who can take a piece of wood and turn it into something like that..
