Q:

AR-15… which one to buy?

Alright, this might be a can of worms, so in the interest of narrowing down the subject, I’ll drill down to what I’m looking for.

Obviously, an AR-15 in .223. Need advice on the best/most reliable MAKE and MODEL.

Reliability and a relatively solid build is the focus. Gotta be “universal” in parts spec, nothing proprietary that I won’t be able to find in five years.

What I want to do is start with the basic deal. Kinda like buying a stock Talon from PA and then going from there…

I’m leaning towards the stock Colt AR-15 with heavy barrel. Basically because they’re the O.G. OEM.

Looked at Bushmasters, but can’t find a “stock” one anywhere. Even Gander Mountain is selling them with quad-rails and a bunch of hoo-hah attached to it, which in my mind is just an excuse to drive up the price.

DPMS is awesome stuff, but out of contention due to cost.

Is there anything wrong with getting a Colt and upgrading as I go along?

What to look for if I consider a used gun?

Any other suggestions?

What say you?

Lots of question, I know… thanks for your consideration and advice.

Hey Sharon !

ive been very happy with my bushmaster………..

I was researching AR15 subject recently since I wanted to get one…

Les Baer – custom. Excellent.
Armalite – mil specs. Excellent.
Stag Arms – mil specs. Excellent.
Rock River. Very good. (DEA is armed with RR)
Bushmaster. Excellent.

Of course, there are others, but these are my 5 top.

Just one more thing. If you want to shoot heavy match ammunition (70-90 gr) you will need an extended throat in the chamber and a high twist rate of the barrel. And don’t shoot 5.56 mm ammo in a rifle chambered for .223 However you can do the opposite, no problem.

Thanks for everyone’s advice… looks like I’ve got some shopping to do.

Not to belabor the point, but one more question in the other direction:

Which manufacturers should I absolutely positively stay away from?

Thanks again!

Hey, I looked at that ZM… He took the best of the AR and the best of the AK and made one hell of a gun. Too bad we cili-vilians will never be able to buy one in full-auto. But, I might have to try and get a semi, assuming our ombamanation doesn’t get them banned first. 🙁

Thanks for posting the video

I have had no problems with my stag arms. They are very tight guns and I can get 1″ groups at 100 yards with a 16″ barrel (leupold 3 x 12 scope). I also have 2 sundevil mfg. lowers on order.

Les Baer makes a hell of a gun. But a little pricier. 1/2″ MOA standard. 😀 That and the POF. The new Sig really looks promising. Best trigger in a pure factory .223 semi I have used yet! But Gun is heavy.
Mike

I have a Colt AR15 lower and three different uppers, all .223/5/56 Nato. I also have a Romainian made AK-47 (semi-auto, 7.62X39, wood stock) If I were going into battle, or hunting coyotes, I’d carry the AK… Just my opinion…

I went through the same deal a few months ago. I got the DPMS and love it!! It wasnt higher than the Colt and didnt have all the jazz hanging off of it, just a carry handle 😉

id say oly arms

It all depends on your pocket book the best one out there to buy would be a POF lots of money but you wont ever have problems with the piston style gun’s if you are on a budget Bushmaster DPMS & Rock river receivers are all made in the same machine shop so depends on what you wont to spend I would probably go toward anything chrome lined while you can still buy them because as soon as Obama can he will pull a Clinton on us all maybe even worse

I have the colt and a bush I bought this for an employee for a gift in my opion its the one to have. people say it wears out but i can say i shoot it more then the rest and its had over 10,000 rounds threw it and its still my fav..
