Any serious coyote hunters out there?
After my friends, fly-fishing, cigar bars, mountain biking/hiking the High Sierras, and micropubs, I miss yote hunting the most. 😛 Now, living in Western Washington, I would have to drive at least two hours for a good calling spot. In Nevada I barely drove 15 minutes and I was in yote heaven! I truly envy you gentlemen in Texas merely having to step outside to hunt.

Fortunately my main coyote-hunting partner (EvilLurker is his handle hehe) feels the same way I do about getting an airgun coyote kill on video; which is to say he thinks it would be just awesome!! Pretty sure he would rather videotape me shooting one than shoot one himself with his AR!

I’m in Western Oregon, and have been getting after them every chance I get. Though I got a late start because I was waiting for my furbearer license to show up in the mail (applied late) so I wouldn’t have to hold back on any fox, or bobcats that came in.
I’ve only been out less than a dozen times, but have called in several different predators (bear, bobcat, several coyotes). No opportunities for a safe shot within range yet, though. Two of the coyotes came in at night while spotlighting for bobcat, so I couldn’t shoot them legally. Three others came in at once on another occasion, but were a little far out, and skylined.
I’m going out at least twice this coming week. One of my hunting partners is leaving his gun at home, and bringing only the Johhny Stewart PM-4 e-caller, and a video camera to hopefully get an airgun coyote kill on tape with 😀
I’m not stopping until I get one. Then I may lay-off of them for the denning/mating season if I can help myself 🙄
By far the most exciting hunting I have done yet.
We used to shoot the heck out of them back in KS. Squeakers. Spotlights.
.22-250s. They are a hell-of-a good time to shoot. (And shooting them
SIGNIFICANTLY helped out the quail and pheasant populations, to boot!)
Haven’t tried yet with the ‘ol condor (yet). First chance I get, however…

I am just starting to learn about cayote hunting and am interested in anyone who would like to Hook up and do some yote hunting.
I am not sure where to go here for the best hunts.

I also live in Western Washington, but lived in Eastern Washington for about 7 years while I went to college. Hope to move back within a year or two. Anyhow, there ARE coyotes on both sides of the mountains, but there is much more open coyote habitat on the East side. Yes, there are coyotes on this side, but they are usually either in wooded areas or semi-rural spots where neighbors are too close to shoot them with anything but a bow or a large caliber airgun. (Keep in mind you can’t hunt them with airguns in Washington, either, but it wouldn’t stop me if I caught one near my dogs!) If you are fortunate enough to find a spot with enough space, I suspect that the weapon of choice would be a shotgun, as the shots will be close because of the thicker timber on this side of the hill. And since shotguns dissipate their energy quickly, it is way less likely that someone will be accidently shot. Sorry the news isn’t better, but if you feel like hitting the hills outside of Ellensburg or Yakima, you will find plenty of dumb coyotes to shoot!

the exact opposite is in fact true, I went from hunting and caching steel head in my yard in point arena, ca. to hunting and caching salmon in my yard in duvall, back to point arena after the divorce and lived two cabins down from were I was with the river 300 yards away instead of the front yard to this baring land in were you can spend all day out in the woods and not come across a single animal, let alone something in season. I have never been let alone lived in a place that has the lack of wild life that this place has.
Yeah, Duvall is only an hour away. My friend takes her Red Tail & Goshawk hunting up there for rabbits and the game fowl. I’ll have to ask her about the coyote situation.
I’m mainly repeating what other hunters in my area have told me (none of which are actual predator hunters). They all tell me, “Go East young man, go East.” Blue, it sounds like you went from good to great in the hunting department.
The dogs I hunted in San Luis Obispo, CA and Washoe Valley, NV were very very dumb yotes; thank goodness. No one hunted the damn things so they weren’t call shy AT ALL. All I ever needed was my homemade ghille, Johnny Stewart distress, and a little patience. These dogs always came “bounding” within range (I used a 77/22 .22 mag exclusively) of about 100 yrds. Though, most of my shots were taken between 25 – 75 yrds. To get them to stop and look I would make a simple mouse distress with my lips. I don’t know if the yotes thought it was a mouse or it just confused them. But, 9 times out of 10 it stopped them in their tracks.
I feel for you Ambush. I’ve never encountered that shy tip toe shit I’ll bet you’re familiar with.
Sam, you do have some fine fly-fishing just over the hill in Yosemite. I’ve driven through Merced once. We generally take the 5 and go around.
This computer technology sucks at times. You forget what’s done instantly over the Net could be a 12 hour flight across Atlantic to meet someone. I wish they had invented the Net to coincide with the invension of the Teleporter. 😀

I am in SE TX. Plenty of coyotes as you know. Great challenge cuz these dogs are smarter than me 😀
FW, we had a shit load of ‘yotes around when I lived in duvall, which is not that far from you. dam good pheasant hunting there as well 😉
