Eliminating "Twang" how important?
How important is it to eliminate the spring “twang” in a springer?
I purchased my Big Cat used with a Maccari spring kit already installed (by the user I am certain) and it still twangs quite a bit. I had thought this kit was supposed to end this, but when I inspected it the other day (visible from bottom with stock removed), I notice that the plastic guide inside the spring at the base has quite a gap between the inner diameter of the spring and the outer surface of the guide. Isn’t this supposed to be flush with the inside of the spring to stop the twang?. It looks like the original owner may have ordered the wrong kit. (????)
What do you think guys? Do I need to measure the springs inner diameter and order a different guide for it?
What difference would it really make? If it only stops the twang, I would still like to fix this as it is kind of annoying. I long for that “solid thump” that others say they get with no twang after the shot.
It shoots pretty damn good for a springer (and inspite of me… LOL)

Rich has done some great things with my varmint hunter . I just had him shorten my barrel and install a muzzle brake and it’s sweet dead on accurate and backyard friendly to some extent .If you send it to rich it will come back a changed gun .
Ok – I was just wondering where Rich in Mich came into it because I didnt see him mentioned in the first post.
Nice to see he’s backing up his work like that – I’ve heard good things about him.
The reason I that it think it was Rich’s kit was that the ad said This Gamo Bigcat has a Rich from Mich kit($70) in it with his trigger insert and a new apex seal, JM lubes
(With this kit installed, I practically stole this gun for the $90.00 I paid with shipping!!!)

It definately had the trigger insert, I swapped it out for a GRT3 trigger and gave it away on the Recycle Bin.

Just don’t know for sure why the insert would be too small since Rich says he matches them before sending them out.
Perhaps the owner put in another spring? I will know more when I take it all apart.
Rich is far from the only place to get maccari springs, Maccari himself sells his springs direct…. Unless the guy said it was a Rich in Mich guide then I would very much doubt it has one from him.
And yes, the springs should be touching the guide’s when uncompressed – when compressed they expand somewhat sideways, so when you fire they uncompress and hug the guide and it stops the twang like a finger on a ringing tuning fork.
I emailed Rich in Mich with some questions about it and he offered to make a guide free of charge!!! 😯 WoW!

I am going to make a spring compressor and remove the parts, photograph them and send that to him to see if it is actually his.
I would be glad to pay for the part and even if he sends it for free I will find a way to make it up. Certainly will pay for postage, etc.
If the original owner didn’t use the right parts or changed them, it isn’t Rich’s fault.
A good spring guide will help with the twang too.
When I bought a spring and guide for my RWS 54 the guide was the majority of the cost so maybe the previous owner just bought a new spring.
I have a couple of Macarri springers. R7 (Jim hated them) and a R10 bull barrel FT.
Spare springs came with 2 little tubs of grease. One was marked
Moly and was to be spread over the sliding surfaces of the spring.
The other said Tar (real sticky) and coated the non sliding surfaces of the spring.
The tar damped the twang and ringing of the spring.

I have a 124 that makes a lot of spring noise when I shoot it. Its always been that way, had it over 20 years. I just learned how to shoot it and ignored the noise.
Wasnt until a few years ago I came across info on tuning them, but by then I got into PCPs and havent messed with it much.
Bottom line: work on it or have it worked on if you plan on shooting it much. That twang gets to me after a little while.
Now if I could just get rid of tank ping.
If it is annoying by all means fix it. One less thing to effect your accuracy. 😉
