Changing regulator outputs?

Is there anyway to do this easily that won’t feck up the reg? I bought mine S/H as a 850 PSI output but I’m not getting the power I want. I was only filled to about 1000 PSI If that makes a differance?……… It was filled to 2500 PSI but the tank dumped abit 😆 So can I adjust It or Is It a case of buying a more powerfull reg??

I never meant 20FPE as a low power just I assumed the 1400 PSI reg would give more power. Yep, consistancy Is the main aim but If the power Isn’t good the range will be cut down accordingly. Still, I’ll get In contact with Matt and see what he says. Last question, How many shots do you get from a full 3KPSI fill and the 48CU tank running the 1K4PSI reg?

I guess I don’t see 20 fpe from a 12 inch barrel as ‘such low power’, as I said it’s where I shoot it with the normal HPA tank.

It makes sense to me that 1400 psi would deliver less potential energy than 3000 psi, somewhat offset by the larger bore on the CO2 adapter.

The goal is uniform shots, not brute power.

I don’t know what level you shoot at, but I suspect 20 fpe in 12 inches and 30 or so in 24 is a pretty common level. I get the 20 I shoot at with 16 grain pellets at 750. I run the same pellets at 925 fps or so in longer barrels.

Thanks again Doug. I never thought 1400 PSI would give such a low power. What weight pellets were you shooting to get 20FPE from the 1400PSI?

I think, within reason, changing the spring and messing with shims in a smart way gives the authorized guys something to work with.

I’m not sure about a formula, but my experience with this is 12 fpe at 850 and 20 at 1400 in my 12 inch Talon SS, same places I like to shoot on HPA. This is ‘about mid range’ on the dial. You get a pile of 12 fpe shots as well.

Thanks Doug, Looks like I’ll need a new reg then as I don’t know of anywhere that changes them. Is there a general rule of thumb on output PSI to output FPS power or Is It just guess work?

Pressure is usually adjusted by shims under the spring under the ‘bonet’ on the top. Just like the power adjuster in the AF guns, more shim means more spring force to be overcome, more pressure out.

HOWEVER, and this is extremely important, you need to be safely within the range the regulator is designed for. Push it too far, and let the spring become coil bound and it won’t be able to shut down. Suddenly, without warning, the output pressure jumps to full tank pressure.

I’ve seen this happen in a higher quality reglator than is used in PB tanks. It had worked fine for a long time, the post mortum on the accident decided that rapid gas draw had chilled the moving valve post enough to shorten it a mite. It was already close to failure, that pushed it over the line when nobody expected any problems. Without a blow out or other safety, gas lines let go. Scary stuff. Best left to experts. I’d send it to the shop for them to adjust.
