Advice on “ping” noise when fired

Hello everyone,
I’ve got a standard 22 mutant that I enjoy shooting except for the “ping” noise from the hammer area when it’s fired. If it wasn’t for this “ping” noise the gun would be silent, well I have an extra Donny FL mod on it so that helps too..

Any suggestions? Hopefully someone has fixed this issue already, I’m handy enough with things to follow instructions if you have them.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi All,

With this topic in mind, does anyone know of a source of spare hammers for the Taipan Veteran?  I can likely make some for myself on an old Hardinge toolroom lathe but that would not be feasible if my friends all like the results of the hammer mods.  (As usual the geometry is easy.  The material properties like heat treat are the mystery as I’ve not got a hardness tester.)

I’d have to say that any mechanical engineer that is serious about mechanism design should be required to tear down a Taipan Vet.  They are a modern example of a company that designs for manufacturability to make a quality product at a competitive cost.  Look at the trigger group.  All wire EDM.  There are no holes as the wire is just run in from the edges to cut the pivot locations.  I am quite amazed.

Thank you all for your replies.

I can see where your hammer modification would make a difference in the noise, nice repair. Unfortunately I don’t have the machine shop to do that work so I’ll just have to live with the noise.

Or as suggested just give the gun to a new deserving home who can live with the noise… not likely my friend! It’s a critter gitter for sure, even with the noise.

Thanks again everyone!

As an experienced tuner … also owning a .22 mutant and .177 veteran THEY DO INDEED PING loudly from the steel hammer to steel poppet stem collision.

Just a few days ago did a modification to my VET addressing this. As too PING … Removed the hammer and using a CARBIDE spot drill placed a small @ 150″ deep hole. Then ran in a 3/16″ 2 flute carbide end mill to make a flat bottom pocket on the striking end of hammer. From there cut a small stub of PEEK and pressed it in. THIS TRICK took away at best guess 80% of the shot noise these Taipans make when firing being that very distinct TINK / PING.

Sadly the Mutant hammer being similar in design is a SMALLER hammer and the smaller diameter carbide tooling to do the same i don’t own.

Milksack has it right. Back the hammer spring out a bit and see if that resolves the problem. The cause of the “ping” is the hammer striking the valve to release compressed air and fire the gun.

If this does not resolve the problem, send me the gun. I can live with the ping, and you can purchase another brand of pcp that won’t ping. While you will incur the loss of the shipping and purchase price of the gun, this is fair because it will permanently resolve your problem!

There is no need for thanks. PM me for shipping details.

Ken how fast is the gun shooting? I’ve own 2 standard mutants neither of them ever pinged. Only thing I can think of is the hammer being turned all the way up. Can you shake it up and down and hear the hammer rattle?

I have never known a taipan to ping…
As mentioned before I would pull out that hammer spring and inspect..
