It’s good when you put the work In and then really see It pay off In the field, Makes all the hours worth while.

I bet she won’t try picking up a live squirrel again Cygnus 😆

on a field trip in the 7th grade….we saw a red squirrel get run over by a mini cooper (the old very small car) one of the girls rushed to save it…as it was still alive….it thanked her by sinking its teeth into her finger…and into the bone…some infections and surgery later…that finger will never be the same nor work like it should…shame as an index finger is quite handy

Do you work yours on anything else? I know you have some bigger more fun quarry over there 😉

No, we just do rats and Voles. I pretty much do all the work (smoking, digging, extraction). All she has to do is hang back for an easy chase and kill 😆 . She doesn’t have nearly the training you folks give your dogs on the other side of the pond. Maybe if I had more time and patience.

It wasn’t a rat she tried to retreive live but a squirrel 😆 She had It by the scruff and It just hung tere which I was suprised about as the rest she has caught thrash like hell! I didn’t take It off her as I value my fingers but I got killed when she brought It In all the same.

Nice pic’s, that dog will hate squirrels now 😆

Your absolutely right Photo. In a fair number of cases once your dog is outperformed in a fight against prey that’s it! Albeit, with a LOT of training that behavior can be expelled.

Mine took to rats fine, just ripped In to them and shook the life out of them but It took a few nips from the squiges to sink In. She even tried to retreive me one live to hand

My dog has those typical “Pit” jowls. One bite and the critter is done. Of course this took a while for Palynn to figure out. She had such a soft mouth at first (my fault for the training I gave her). The only thing she would truly clamp down on were her inanimate toys. After a few bites on the muzzle from Mr. Rattus she quickly sharpened up. We had a wire hair Fox Terrier that performed the shake/neck-break flawlessly. Palynn never learned that method.

Retrieving a rat ? Holly cow! I read about that same thing in “Tales of a Rat Hunting Man” I laughed my ass off. 😆
No offense Fusion, but I would have loved to have been there when she handed it to you. Nothing like expecting a corpse and getting handed a live one! I’ll bet that woke you up real quick.

Good job too 😆 The the dog plays with squirrels that much It deserves to get owned by the mamma 😆 Mine took to rats fine, just ripped In to them and shook the life out of them but It took a few nips from the squiges to sink In. She even tried to retreive me one live to hand 😆

Yup that’s the collieX. She’s far from slow off the mark but the little balck one Is like a rocket where as the collieX has the gears for longer runs 😉 If something tries to straight line her I’d put money on her catching It the majority of the time.
No more vids I’m affraid. The ground Is like concrete here so I don’t do any lamping during the summer. I keep meaning to fabricate a bracket to fit on the lamp to hold the camera but something else always crops up 😆

Nice pic’s, that dog will hate squirrels now 😆

Nice pics FWB, Are they yours? I love squirrel hunting and so does the dog 8) And they certanly are tough, She has the scars to prove It 😆

No, those pics weren’t mine. They’ve been floating around net for a few months now.
My dog has taken a few squirrels with no problems. Though, she does have a few facial battle scars from the rats. There’s nothing like a little pain to help expedite the learning process. She doesn’t get bit nearly as much as she used to.

You’ve got yourself a beautiful Lurcher there, and by the kill a very fast one too.
By the markings that must be the Border Collie / Whippet you were talking about? She’s got some good definition throughout the chest; a good accelerator off the line no doubt.
Any more lamping vids you’d like to share?

Cheers, Brad

LOL great photos 😆

I’m pretty sure most small rodents (squirrels, mice, rats, Jimmy Carter) will go to extremes to protect their young.

When I’m smoking out rats I immediately know which ones are “does with pups” and which are not. Most rats leaving their holes just scurry away frightened (generally right into my net or dog’s mouth). The doe’s perspective, on the other hand, is to find the source of the chaos and start biting. From my experience the human leg is a fantastic starting point.

ALWAYS have your pants/BDUs boot banded when smoking out rats!

I can attest to what Mike said, I have seen those little bastards hanging off my dog’s lips more than once, that little psycho mutt of mine wins in the end every time though, needles to say I keep him up to date on all his shots, I never know what he’s going to kill out in the woods 😈

I shot a squirrel with a .410 and walked over to pick him up and put him in the game bag (many years ago). Lucky for me he shredded my pants and never got a hold of me personaly. I think they are the toughest animal pound for pound period. I always use the analagy that if you are 6 times the size of a squirrel (much more but use that). I have shot the squirrels out of trees 75-95 feet high and seen them bounce on the ground and never miss a step. Think about that you get shot fall 500 feet (adjusted for your size compared to a squirrel) get up and run away in a second. I do not know about you I think we are dead instantly.

A pissed off Squirrel can be a bad little sucker! It’s unreal the punishment they can dish out and or take. Like a buzz saw on steroids!

Never Ever pick up a squirrel until you are absolutely with out a doubt sure it is DEAD!!!

They will be all over you like a Texas Twister with teeth

Top to bottom. You’ll be bleading from places you didn’t even know you had places.

Funny as Hell to watch though! 😀 (from a distance!)
As Long as it Ain’t you! 😯
