Q:

Sighting in/zeroing question

I’m probably overthinking this, but if ya have 2 cents, let’s hear it.

When zeroing a scope, is it best to keep the bore somewhat level with the target, or does it make any diff? I’m thinking level is best, but the comfort of sitting on my deck rather than laying in the grass leads me to this question.

Particulars: About 23 yds, and I’ll be shooting downwards at somewhere between 5 and 10 degrees. Not far and not too steep… Obviously, the Talon will shoot flat over that distance, so no elevation issues,

I’m wondering if zeroing a scope while shooting on a decline angle will futz up the zero for flat and level shooting at other distances.

What say you? Should I just get in the grass and zero it at flat and level?

Thanks!

OK, horizontal/level it is… I’ll get my ass in the grass, it belongs there after all, considering I haven’t seen any for the last six months here in Michigan… 😉

I’m expecting a gun rest to arrive tomorrow, so after I sort its details I should be dialing in this weekend.

Thanks for the advice guys, I’ll take it from here.

Yep!

And don’t forget that a lot of things like rabbits are on the ground
so it will have a very similar angle. Only fairly steep angles will make much difference at the ranges we shoot. Like a Starling in the top of a tree. 😀

Buzz are you familiar with the “one shot sight in” technique?

It is one that bench rester’s use. It works really well if you have a scope with good repeatability.

We are moving tomorrow so I may not catch your answer so here is the technique just in case.

Use a steady bench and bags if possible. Bore sight the gun by eye by removing the bottle and putting the bull in the center of the rifle barrel. Carefully crank the scope to give you the same poi while checking both. It makes the bbl. act like a peep sight.

Now fire one round. Keep the gun very steady for this part. VERY STEADY!!! Place the cross hair on the bull and adjust the cross hair until it intersects the pellet hole.

You are now sighted if the gun was steady and the scope adjustment accurate. If it is a lesser quality scope, lightly tap the turret housing with the handle of a screwdriver to settle it in.

Fire a round for effect. It should be on, or very little off. Repeat if necessary.

zero on the target you will be playing with of your deck, then get out in the field and learn your dots 😉

Getting on an horizontal level while zeroing on your target is to obtain a true zero. But if you think about it….when in the field at what angle is your quarry most likely to be at….up a tree, down a hill or on a perfect level.Zero at a comfortable level and get best of both imho.
Others may think different.
