Grinding HSS
I have always been taught to grind by hand to keep the temp low and to dip frequently to keep the temp stable. But I got really tired of spending hours to produce specialty bits that I needed, so I just found this bit, (ha, pun intended) you guys may also wish to read it. I found it fascinating:

ps: Mike, I’m thinking of buying one of them new fangled diamond wheels, but damn things are so expensive you’d think they’re color D Flawless. I never could afford better than VVS1 or 2 myself.

Man! I wish I had time to read more of the wrightings, and to post a response.
I have been making cutting tools for over 30 years and heat treating them almost as long. tool Steel. High Speed, and Exotics.
Some of the information I read here is some what true. Not one of them got much of it right. 🙁
Every damed one of them missed what color means. Or oxidation color really is.
And as far as grinding on A/O wheel for Hss. It doesn’t work very well. You see, some of the carbides are harder than Alu/oxide is. So you get a tearing out of the carbides from the softer matrix of the steel. It will have a bit of a micro scopic saw look to it.
Silicon carbide works better, but all these are old school and way out dated. By a couple of decades.
I use only synthetic Diamond belts on special equipment, or Ceramic carbide. The tools stay dead cool through out the sharpening process with these.
