Q:

Talon SS Accuracy – Old thread Restarted

Besides killing pests, my other passion is bench rest accuracy with any firearm or air gun. I have read a previous thread “Talon SS accuracy problems” and found the advice to helped my solve any accuracy issues with my new stock Talon SS .177. I shoot bench rested indoors and outdoors and the comments by ribbonstone about support and lateral pressure are the key. My other air gun is an IZH-46M with a Burris scope and I shoot only Beeman H & N match grade wad-cutters. My standard of accuracy is two pellets through the same hole without being able to tell you shot more than one pellet – a clean hole – easy to judge with wad-cutters – more diffucult with round nose pellets. I try and put pellets through progressively round holes with-out touching the wire surrounding the holel

What I now believe:
I now believe that wadcutters and the Talon SS are a bad match -. both on air and C02
For maximum accuracy – controlling the movement and how the talon is braced does make a difference. It seems you have to let the gun have its way and the less restricting the hold, the more accuracy realized.
It was more difficult to learn how to become accurate with the Talon than with my IZY, but I did enjoy the learning curve.
The most accurate pellet I have found are the Beeman Field Target Specials at 8.8 grains at a consistent low power setting indoors – range around 38′. For outdoors I up the power and range with still excellent results. 2700 lbs starting works well – I don’t fill above that any more.
I also use CO2 indoors and the pellet accuracy with Beeman field Targets is dead on.

The Beeman Kodiaks are a little more accurate than the Predators – especially with air – and I have had excellent results with these. I probably won’t buy any other pellets than Kodiaks or round nose field targets and will probably back off Predators eventually. Still working on which weight pellet to use with air – the 8.8 grains on C02 are the king.

For hunting I use Predators for both air and C02 with a one shot one kill 90% of the time – all depending upon shot accuracy.

I am considering getting an extended barrel and shroud from Talon tunes to increase the power along with goint to 22 caliber- any comments as to what I might expect with this would be appreciated.

Next on the list is a Chrony to see what’s really going on.

I thank all who contributed to the previous “Talon SS accuracy problems” thread.

My best acuracy results come from the use of 8.8 grain Beeman Field Target round nose pellets for both short and long range.

The 10.65 Beeman Kodiak double golds are as accurate, but I like the speed of the Ft’s.

I use the JSB Predators exclusively for all hunting, and they are surprisingly accurate for me.

I haven’t had any luck yet with consistency in Wadcutters, but I am not done trying them. I have tried Beeman H & N match grade and Avanti match grade wadcutter with some flyers for no reason. I have som Meisterklugens which I will try tonight.

I will also note that when shooting indoors and when I remove the shroud end bushing, I can shoot a bit faster without barrel cooling effecting my accuracy – to be expected.

Bought my .22 cal Talon SS from Dave Franz (D & B Airguns) at the Little Rock show last year. He also handed me a tin of Meisterkugeln wadcutters. I’ve tried a lot of other pellets and so far none have been as accurate as these. They are only 14 grain, but I have punched through dead center on a 2″ by 2″ marker flag at a 100 yards. Lucky shot admittedly, but it did surprise me.

My 177 SS likes Baracudas (same as KodiacM), eun jin 16 gr domes, and crossman copper head points. I tried the new Gamo Red fire which are JSB predator clones, which weigh 8 gr and I saw this weekend groups and some flyers…I plan to try JSB preds. soon. I think with this gun and the power level gig, the heavy pellets shine the most for groups and fpe potential for hunting.

Not an AF barrel, so it might make a differnce. It’s 16″ of an old SSP gamo match rifle (mod. 126) and a set of self made black Delrin bushings. But it seems to shoot at least one type of WC real well.

Did take some time to find the right way of holding the rifle, with attention paid to the grip (these are the “no-grip” hold…kid of a pinch between trigger and the back part of the grip).

Co2 can shoot, so can WC’s, at least at shorter ranges.
