.22 Sabot for air rifle.
Saw a blurb for a .22 / .17 sabot on the WWW
This would maybe allow a .22 pellet rifle to shoot a high quality .17 caliber bullet at highest MV available. With no sound barrier limit.
I am not a speed freek. And am looking for Hunting accuracy.
Anyone know if availble or who manufactures them.

I got my Sabots in and loaded three of them with the die that comes with them to hold them straight in the Sabot.
I didn’t clean my barell the first shot high and the other 2 hit in the center at 25 yards in my Corsair rifle 308.
I didn’t use the graph to check them but I will later and give a speed report. 😀
Close range? 20, 25 yards, the lowly wadcutter has great expansion and schock, good accuracy. Its my favorite close in pellet.

Weight for weight a .17 round could have a superior BC over a .22 round and so fly further, retain speed for longer and hit harder at distance. I say this as theoretically the smaller the frontal area the lower the drag coefficient could be. But in the real world it would depend on the rounds actual design and if you could get enough spin on the round to keep it stable in flight. Defiantly worth a try at least. The ones I posted above apparently worked very well but I have never tried for my self.
I don’t know about .22 to .177 But i got some for my DAQ .308 to .22 i pour my bullets so i though i would give it a try you never know till you try :18 :18 :18

Which skenco is a sabot pellet? Far as I am concerned the Skenco’s are crap to start with. I saw a 16 grain skenco and my condor won’t shoot any 16 grains pellet accurately. The sabot is a 2 two part and the skenco is 1 one part projectile.
sabot will use a .17 20 grain or higher bullet (pellet) weight, which my condor like’s the heavy weights, ie kokiaks, eun jins.
I know a .17 bullet won’t expand at Air rifle velocities. But for Pest control I don’t need it. For Skull neck shoulder spine hip shots on varments I want the bullet go all the way through.
What .22 pellets are you using to get good expansion. I can’t use Polymags because too much velocity.
I also just realized that at air rifle velocities the sabot may not separate from the bullet. Would defeat the whole purpose here.

You’re not a speed freak and are looking for hunting accuracy?
My 2 cents is that a saboted .17 (bullet or pellet) will not be as accurate as shooting the proper .22 caliber lead pellet.
I’ve used the saboted pellets from Skenco with less than stellar results. Though, they do penetrate very well because they are very hard.
If you do hit your mark, the 17 bullets aren’t going to expand as they were designed to do in high velocity firearms. Not even as well as a lead pellet.
I’m not talking put a pellet in a sabot.
I would put a .17 caliber bullet into the sabot. And I think it would fly further and faster and hit harder than any .177 diabolo pellet.
maybe It wouldn’t bee better than .22 pellet, but velocity wouldn’t effect it.

Makes no sense to me to use a .177 pellet in a .22 sabot. If anything you would lose accuracy. The guns drive .22 pellets plenty fast and accurate already.
The most effective solution is the one with the fewest parts.
I can’t see where a .17 stuffed into a sabot would provide any greater accuracy or lethality than any of the standard .22 pellets available.

I also remember reading a long time ago that somebody got poor accuracy with the Sussex sabot but great penetration… ok I guess if penetrating deeper into your backstop is consolation for missing the target entirely.
A slightly sub-caliber boat-tail bullet in a hard pressed cardboard cup or some other fiber would not foul the barrel and provide excessive weight and friction. The manufacturing cost to punch and press a cardboard cup around a pellet in one motion (after the first step of making the projectile) wouldn’t be very high but it wouldn’t be nearly as cheap as swaging lead pellets in one step.
A bullet shaped projectile can have a smaller cross section but same weight of a .22 pellet giving it a higher BC.
It’s an interesting concept and sound on paper but I doubt it would ever be as practical or functional as common pellets. I agree with Buzzcat “The most effective solution is the one with the fewest parts. “
