Two afternoons of graft, looks nice but doesn’t work. I spent a long time determining the cause, with a drastic re-modelling in between, it’s the barrel galling inside the breech when it’s at an extreme angle at the beginning of the cock. Alum just doesn’t like riding on steel. Toss.
The next one will be a triple-layer sandwich, delrin core, alum sleeve, delrin jacket. The knob goes all the way through both sides of the breech, it doesn’t wobble. 😆

does the mix of plastic and metal cut down on the ping sound ?
i thought of making a hammer of brass and steel…with holes in it that i would fill with lead…3 kind of metal with different frequency’s, should eliminate any kind of bell sound
of course theres still the tank, and i dont know how to quiet that down….mathews bows use a lead piece suspended in rubber, the guy at the store demonstrated how ping was eliminated by dropping a samle frame with and without, very impressive how 2 pieces of rubber and lead made it go from a high bell sound like dropping a piece of metal, to a semi dead sound that was very short and low

This is what I do for the loose/stripped screw problem.
This is on a 9mm gun – The breach is even thinner than a .22 cal.
Also the 9mm has very heavy springs, thus a heavy cocking force.
This knob is held in place with two #10 screws (about 5 mm).
To make the breach move smoothly, keep the ID of the breach tight to the OD of the barrel — I use about .005 inch clearance.
Also keep the ID of the breach smooth.

seems to me like alot of trouble, triple decker sandwich, make a breech outta Derlin, and for the weight put some rods o brass or something, kinda like a vented barrel bushing but full length and press the metal rods in there.

Personally an all bronze breech would be smokein, bevel the tank side to prevent diggin into the frame.

After many hours of work I finally have a successful tart’s handbag of a breech & cocking-knob. It has a delrin core, an alum sleeve and a delrin jacket. The cocking-knob goes all the way through, as I’d become mighty tired of knobs that always came loose and finally tore out the thread. It’s been tested and cocks maaaghty suh-weet! 😀

Me and Pablo have the idea the ‘ping’ is caused by the breech slapping the tophat off the tank-collar (or the face of the breech hitting the collar, depending on what type of valve is being used). I get one clean sound from my rifle now, a sharp ‘blat’, much more noticeable indoors than out (turns out my ropey silencer is pretty good).
MM, I did something quite similar. I milled a channel right along the top of the breech, milled a full-length ‘knob’ and fixed it on with two grubs. It actually worked very well, and that was with a 100% alum breech. Unfortunately it got a bit of a hammering against the frame while I was experimenting with floating valve-heads. It still worked but it was all starting to look and feel a bit shonky. That gun of yours is fully home-made? Now that is a piece of work! 😀
Saw, this triple-decker was indeed a lot of trouble, but mainly because it’s the first (usual prototype kind of deal). It’s purely for the bling factor, it would work just as nicely if it was 100% delrin. Now I’ve been through making one I know how to do another differently and avoid most of the problems. Mainly to do with the order of the different steps. I guess the biggest drawback is the amount of material used, almost four equal lengths of material (x3 delrin, x1 alum vs x2 delrin and a knob of alum basically).
But it was an interesting and challenging project and it looks the bollocks (I think 😆 ). And it mixes sound functionality (the all-through cocking-knob) with bling (the alum ports). 😀 And a saleable product if somebody’s prepared to pay the price for the amount of material and labour involved, which is quite considerable.
