custom GTBJ fore grip chapt 2 -N- Wokbutt!
Initially I painted this wood fore grip that GTBJ made for me with rubberized undercoating (Don’t waste your time with this…it does not cure hard enough for a rifle stock). Many members recommended rhino lining/bed lining…so I went with this and applied approx. 14 coats. The texture is not nearly as nice as the rubberized undercoating, but it appears to be tough and cured well. I was told by a buddy that “chip guard” is what I really want. He said it cures hard as nails and it has a very similar texture to the rubberized undercoating. I will most likely re-do it with this after I get to shoot some rounds through it as I have not fired it in a very long time and I am jonesin big time!
As many have done before, I went with a universal Houge slip on grip for the pistol grip, but after I put it on, it felt way too loose. A member said he took a heat gun to his to get a tighter fit, but this material rubber is not really the kind that shrinks from heat, so I made the wood shim that you see below to add more “meat to the grip” and fill the slip on grip much better. My fingers are long, so this worked out very well!
I installed Walkonking’s Wokbutt (which incidentally are ten times cooler in person than in photos…awesome work Adam!) and man that thing fits on my shoulder like a silk glove!

Nice looking grip.
I used this. Called , My Grip. Just use a Hot Gun and shape it anyway you want. Its real easy. Under $2.00 got it at hardware store.
That came out looking sweet if I do say so me self 😛

Thanks Buzzcat. I am going to take some time to really get it snug. It still has a little slack in it….Harbor freight is great for that kind of stuff. I picked up a nice gun safe on sale there a few months back for 260.00. No fire rating, but really solid around 270 pounds and really thick metal, not cheaply made like many out there.

I’ve got a Harbor Freight “two temp” heat gun (cost about 8 bux, I think).
Yes, there was way too much free-play when I initially put the Hogue on, totally unacceptable.
You can search for my original post on the subject, but all it boiled down to was to first orient the Hogue where it needed to be, and then apply heat, keeping the heatgun moving so as not to get the grip so hot that it burned or otherwise melted into disfigurement. Start with the back of the grip, most of the “slack” is there.
I went between the low and high settings… heat, let cool, check your work, reheat, let cool. Took maybe the space of 20 minutes over the span of about two hours.
The first heat treatment worked well, but after a few days and bit of use, the grip had some play… so I hit it with the heat again in the same way and that really locked it down for good.
YMMV, depending on how you apply the heat, but it works.
But it looks like you came up with the next best thing, so cheers! 😉
Sorry Buzzcat, no offense intended. In fact, I would like to hear more about your heat and cold techniques so I can get the best fit as well. The extra work I did was in part to get a more substantial grip than the thin stock AF grip. I defer, so please do elaborate on how you made yours work.

Nice work, but for what it’s worth, the careful use of a heat gun on the Hogue grip actually does shrink the rubber down to fit, and fit very well. It might take a few heat/cool applications over a couple days, but it’s a valid approach.
Just sayin’… your solution looks great and I’m glad it works, but there’s no profit in making others think they have to take the extra steps that you went to in order to make the Hogue grip fit.
The best solution is the simplest one, yes? 😉

Thanks…yes, it is much more substantial with that addition. What do you mean by, “those grips don’t make it over here..”???
Nice work dude, that’s looks substantially more comfortable and functional than the weeny stock item. I’m going to try something like that, though I’ll probably have to use a piece of inner-tube as those grips don’t make it over here.
