where to fill
Hello fellow air gunners,
I will be joining the ranks soon with a Talon SS. I am going to get a Hill pump and ASAP a 4500 psi cf tank. Question is where do you guys fill these tanks?? Paintball shops?

Look at Airhogs web site. There’s a fill Calc. there.
I use it to fill my 44 cubic foot CF SCBA tank and then use the SCBA to fill my Condor.
Using the fill calculation page on AirHog’s website, I came up with over 26,000 shots before the pressure drops to 2900 in the big tank.
I know this is an old post but I was wondering if you now know how many times you can fill your SCBA 44cf tank from the larger 6000psi tank? I’ve been considering this. Seems way easier then running back and forth to the dive shop.
Can we use a “paintball” CF tank on the AF rifles? If so, I have one of those laying around from my paintball gun.
Both the Sports Chalet in my area fill to 4500psi on my CF tank, no problem.

No, I didn’t buy a regulator yet. I bought fittings, gauges, bleed valves and needle valves online. All are rated for at least 6000 psi working pressure. I have found, that if I open the Nitrogen tank valve slowly and by using the needle valve, that I can control the fill process to my satifaction. I would NOT walk away while the tank was filling! It takes only a couple of minutes to fill the 44 cf tank from 3000 to 4500.
I will eventually get an adjustable output regulator for the Nitrogen tank. I plan on buying a regulator, adaptor and 45ci tank setup for my Condor from AirHog. I could then hook my 44 CF tank, using the adjustable output regulator, right up to the AirHog adaptor and shoot all day without refilling. Aqua Venviorment regs are on ebay for $239 and AirHog has them for $250.
I didn’t empty the tank for the first fill. Haven’t noticed any problems caused by not emptying the tank first.

I sell Chamber Vacuum Sealers online , and I could use the Nitrogen tank to demo the gas purge option ❓
Did you buy a reg for the tank?
Did you empty your scba tank, then refill with nitrogen?

I just rented a 6000 PSI, 494 cubic foot Nitrogen tank. One year lease is around $70.00 and a refill of Nitrogen runs $60.00. Got it from a local Airgas welding supply. It is 5 ft tall and about 12″ in diameter and is one heavy SOB, about 400 Lbs.

The local sports chalet will no longer fill my (4) 4500 scba CF tanks.
Yes I have the male to mail foster fitting so they can fill it like a 4500 psi paint ball tank.
I was talking to Steve at Pomona-airguns about this and he said he could sell me a din valve for my CF tank.
Armed with this new info, I went back in with one of my scba tanks and asked “If this tank had a din 4500+ valve not this SCBA valve with gauge, could/would you fill it?”
The answer was NO, not if it is larger in volume than a typical paintball 4500 psi tank. The Sports Chalet Has adopted stricter rules than the DOT rules
So now I am down to only one place in Sacramento, CA that I have found will now fill it to 4500. It is called Solon Fire Control.
Unfortunately they Have no clue. they think all CF tanks have a 3 year hydro even my SCI 90ci 4500 CF paintball tank, until I pointed out that it has 5-year hydro print right on the tank.
Yes they will fill to 4500 psi, but it is a hot fill it straight from a $40k compressor.
They don’t even have a $2k cascade tank setup in-line to keep the hours off their compressor?
The end result is you can get your tank filled for $20, but it is so hot that when it cools down you are left with a only a 4K fill not 4500.
So I got mad and bought a 80cf 3500 psi steel tank off craigslist for $150 and now I can fill that for $5 at Sports Chalet no questions asked.
Yes it is heavy, and it sucks to have to drag around, but the fills are cheap.

Just get a fill adapter. If you have a DIN fitting on the valve (like AH sells), AH will sell you their ‘Paint Ball fill adapter’, if you have a SCBA tank (with a CGA fitting on the valve) Joe or Mac 1 can no doubt set you up. I made my own by connecting a male CGA connector (#367 IIRC) to a male QD (which is what the shop is looking for).
In the future I suggest you explain to the shop you’re using it for an airgun and only the top of the fill is useful (not like SCUBA diving). Plan to leave there for a while to cool off so they can top it up for you. Doing this (and being friendly about it) gets me 4500 psi fills, or very close to it depending on how high their compressor is running that day.

All is good I suppose, after reading about Top Hat adjustments and the like, it seems as if 2700-2800 psi is what you want.
My father is a retired machinist, I have to see if he will let go of some of his measuring tools, Calipers, Micrometers, etc so I can get some adjsutments made!!
it sounds like they gave you a hot fill and as things settled 2700 psi is all the tank has
I went to my local sports store, they fill paintball equipment, but told me they could not fill my Talon SS tank, they said they have never seen a valve like that and if it did not have a nipple on it, they could not do it. I wasnt sure about this, so I went and bought a scuba tank, but I only get about 2700 psi out of a fresh tank 😥
You may be able to get it filled at your local fire station for free (Maybe throw in a round carton of ice cream, every now and then).

I think their calc doesn’t handle gun cylinder sizes of cf. If I enter in a 300 cf tank filled to 6000 psi and fill a 2 cubic foot tank from 2500 to 4500 it tells me 0 fills. But will fill the AF bottle 148 times. I can fill the AF tank 17 times 1500 to 2500 from a 44 cf tank filled to 4500 psi. So to be safe lets say 140/15 = 9 44 cf tank fills? With air loss between fillings and all those variables I wanted to get a real life number.
